96 Protege CEL Question
 

Hi guys, I am new to the board here and I have a question. I did some looking through the archives, but i wasn't able to figure out what is required to access the trouble codes on my 96 protege. Its a canadian car, not sure if the matters, but how can you tell if it is an OBDII system or not? I looked under the hood for "OBDII compliant sticker" but didn't see one. The terminal is located under the dash, but doesn't really look like a OBDI.

I know on the General motors vehicles, to get the codes on the OBDI systems you can just jump the two terminals in the plug and the check engine light will flash. Do I need a special scan tool for the mazda?

Sorry Folks, its a 96 Protege not a 95 like the title says....

I believe that our cars, 95-98, are OBDII.

EVERY car (sold in the US at least) from 95-on is OBD-II. It's a requirement. Most 94 models are OBD-II and some 93 models are also. It's standard across the board now.

p.s. If anyone wants a universal OBD-II code reader let me know. I know where they can be picked up pretty cheap.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I suspected it was, but i wasn't certain. My roommate just ordered a scantool, so once that gets in, i'll hook it up and see what i can find out.

Any good sites out there listing the specific Mazda trouble codes?

how much did he pay for a scan tool?? There are ways to check it for free or a way to check it very easily for about $40.

He paid about 100 bucks for a scan tool for his Isuzu. i think it is an Equus something.

How do you check the codes for free and/or $40?

www.harborfreight.com they sell a generic OBD-II scan tool for $39.99

Also, on most vehicles you can take a paper clip and jumper the connecter to make the CEL flash the code.

I know you could short out the terminals on the OBD1 systems, but i didn't think you could do it on a OBD11.

I did it all the time on my mustang and other fords...it may be a ford only thing...they have a diagnostic port under the hood (not OBD-II) that you can jumper.

also, my taurus had an a/c control panel and when you pressed three buttons at the same time it would flash the trouble code...very cool stuff!

Let me know if you can read the codes with the Equus reader, I tried on my '96 (also canadian model) LX 1.8 but the Equus would not connect, see this thread for reference:

The sticker under the hood doesn't say OBD-II...

Yup the Equus reader read it just fine...no problems at all.
