Turbo a 1998 Mazda Protege 1.8l
 

Hey,

I want to turbo my 1998 Mazda Protege 1.8l w/ auto tranny. i just have a few questions, will my engine be able to take the psi from the turbo? and how many pounds can my stock motor take. my next question is will my tranny hold up to all that new found power?

umm yes...

a 1998 Portege 1.8L would be a BP series engine...probably one of the toughest 4 cylinders mazda ever made...hjow much boost you can take is really dependant on how well you are tuned...the tranny, however won't hold up to much, maybe -5-6 psi of boost

Would you have to rebuild the trans (manual or auto) with more durable parts or would you drop a different one in from another car if you went with more than 5-6 psi of boost?

If you run fresh fluids, and the transmission is in good shape to begin with, I don't see why you couldnt run +35 to 40hp from a few lbs of boost without any problems. I have only replaced one or two Autos last year or so. Granted none were modified, but they do seem to hold up if you keep up on the fluids. As long as you're not power braking it and roasting your tires and such all the time, I think it'd last longer than you think.

yes and no. it depends on the generation and such. i guess there were more in this forum (2nd gen, especially) before i joined. it's how it goes, i guess. i don't mind at all--we have good people here.
