Tightening the e-brake

i have an automatic and my e-brake sucks...i can have it up all the way and the car will still move...how do i go about tightening the e-brake to actually work and hold the car still...???

Take the back part of the center console off, and you will find a nut on the side of the e-brake lever, tighten it a couple turns and check it, go for a drive and see if your brakes overheat, you might want to leave the console off, and keep the ratchet and socket with you for quick adjustment, just pull off the road and do it or something.

if rear drum brakes, then it might be that your rear brakes are also out of adjustment... hell, they do so little in the first place that for everyday driving one might not even notice that they are not doing much.

midnightblue97 is right but to give a littl emore detail. Push your front seats forward and you'll find a screw on each side. Undo them and you'll be able to pull the console between the seats off/out. And like he said tighten the nut and take a drive. NOTE the loosening of the e-brake could be a sign that the pads need replacing. So I suggest you check them out. If adjusting the nut at the e-brake doesn't tighten it enough there should be somekind of nut or something in the rear brake area that will adjust them, but beware this was done to my car once and the mechanic tightened it too much and I drove 5 miles before someone told me that my brakes were smoking. That is very dangerous 'cause it could lead to a fire. So I suggest just trying the nut at the e-brake and if not THEN go to the rear.

thanks guys...i will tighten it inside the car first...then i will check the drum brakes...im sure they are shitty by now...

oh, one other thing that I can think of... in some cases the e-brake acting on a drum brake will not hold the car very well from rolling backwards (at least that is the case on the 1973 P30 chevy truck I drive, it holds fine when inclined down, but not when the nose is above the tail).
