Port and Polish intake manifold & Cams...

i read in the how to section that the second gen 1.5L has a single stage intake manifold

ive already asked if the dual stage ones can be swapped from the 1.8L BP's but they dont line up...

now i am wondering if there is any performance gains to be had from a simple port and polish, or is it not worth it because i would end up loosing my low end torque....

also....
if i were to get cams....
and use them in conjunction with my ported and polished IM....

would i need to get the cams grinded in a certain way?
or would i need to have the IM machined in a certain way to get maximum performance??
like, so they would work well with eachother??

and my last question....

would i have to do anything to my ECU to keep the right mixture??

thanks...

what about the intake manifold? would a port and polish there help at all? and can you get the cams reground to just add a little extra power in the low end to help take off?

uhmm sorry actually i asked what i didn't mean to, i was wondering about the exhaust, would getting that ported do anything

about the ecu...
im guessing you would probably go with a haltec, or some other stand alone...

i dont know if i want to go thru all that trouble...

i was thinking of a piggyback controller...
something like apexi offers..

now i know that you could adjust the mixture at part throttle applications, but at full throttle the factory ecu goes back to preset settings and ignores the o2 sensors....

would the air fuel controller be able to adjust the "preset" values??

but i thought no one makes headers for the 1.5L? was i wrong? (getting very hopefull)

Pigeon January-18th-2003 12:54 PM

well, if the apexi cannot adjust the preset values...
other than a stand alone system, how would i go about getting that done??

also, if i got a FPR, i would be able to adjust the overall pressure, but i mean, would that change everything, the preset values, or the part throttle ones??

im trying to avoid extensive tuning, and too high costs....
thats why im mainly looking at cams and intake manifold mods...
and i will do the install myself
thats why im not too much in favour of a standalone...

Pigeon January-18th-2003 12:57 PM

my budget for the motor work, parts labour and tuning is about 2000 CDN...

so a swap is probably out of the question cause i cant find a complete 1.8L motor tranny combo
then i gotta still get it installed

and a BPT is gonna be more...

i dont want nitrous...

and a stand alone installed and tuned would cost quite a bit also...

i want my car to have a 1/4 mile time between 15.9 and 15.3
not loose too much low end power...
and still be street drivable...
i want a power increase from around 2800rpm to 6500
so if i loose a bit of power below 2800 its alright

right now im at 17.3 which is rather pathetic...
with the cams and IM i figure i could make it into the 16's
and after that im considering a aluminum flywheel (indigo speed makes one, but its questionable whether its good)
and a centreforce clutch...
that should hopefully bring me into the low 16's or high 15's
and if im lucky even faster

so thats my dillemma

Take this with however many grains of salt you like.
I remember reading on Protegetech something from Vaughan that Centreforce Dual Friction clutches weren't all they are cracked up to be.
Keep in mind he might have been talking about high horsepower applications, but your comment that you wanted to get one jogged my memory a little bit.
I don't know much on the subject myself but I haven't heard anything bad about Clutchmasters. A Stage 1 should be fine for your car I would think.

you could get decent power out the 1.5L say around 130 to 150 if you use turbo ,, I am not sure but I think you could get more though ... the turbo would not cost much though as you would just need the turbo the blow off valve ,, pipping and someone to make the manifold , wich should be no more than 300 bucks , or so... I really don't see the sense of paying more than 300 bucks for the manifold ,,, anyway ,, that said ,, with pipping and a piggyback controller or just something to raise that feul preassure up ,, ... you should be good ... think about this the 1.5L has way more room in the engine bay than the 1.8L .. so you can fit the turbo in there and acessing the parts won't be that hard ... I personally have to get another engine ,due to the high mileage ,, well not have to but I want to ,, ... just to be on the safe side .. I am just contemplating weather to get the 2nd gen 1.8 with the 2nd gen harness and comp , custom turbo many and turbo and then move on with factory ecu and piggyback .... If I get the gtx ,, I may look at running into wiring problems , but I am not 100%sure .....
either way you could do something with the 1.5L you will just have to spring say 2 to 3 grand on the turbo install ,... I figure that just buying the stuff and installing yourself aside from having the welder weld the pipes and bend and make the manifold ...

p.s. something to look into

well, i said i planned on spending 2 on the motor...

but i would also be spending 1 g on the tranny possibly and about 2 more on the suspension

i dont really want to put too much money into one area...
but all of this wont be just yet...

i should have everything the way i want it buy NEXT summer.....

i would go turbo, but im worried about drivability and engine management.....
a piggy back computer wont do the trick because at full throttle the factory ecu is gonna go back to preset air fuel mixtures which will be too lean...
unless an adjustable fpr can fix that??
