Fuel Filter

I have a 98 LX 1.5, some days it runs great. On other days it will stall when idled. I asked the Mazda shop nd they said it was the fuel filter. I also asked a reputable independent and they said the same thing. Has anyone else seen this problem?
If it is the fuel filte, how hard is it to change?

you have to pull out the complete intake, and then look all the way down in the back by the firewall, under the brake master cylnder and you will see the gas filter there, and let me tell you it is a bitch to get out ...

First loosen your fuel filler cap ,take out the intake piping ,and use a long pilers to remove the top line ,then use a swivel 10 mm socket and a 24 in swivel extension and loosen the two nuts holding the filter. If you have cruise remove the actuator on the pass strut tower and reach one hand down around the engine let go of the lower clamp and the other down by the throttle body to hold the filter and and take it up .Most replacment filters have no bracket so remove before you get rid of the filter.
