Exhaust Manifold/ Headers for a 98 1.8L

Hey guys. I just found this site and I'm hoping you all can help me with some exhaust issues on my 98 Protege. I've got both a cracked exhaust manifold and a plugged catalytic converter. First, do I have to shell out the $400+ to Mazda for a factory catalytic converter or will the 'universal' one from autozone fit? They say it should fit but Midas said I had to go Mazda. Second, where is a good place to get either a good used stock exhaust manifold or a performance replacement exhaust header? I've found a few salvage yards online but if anyone has a recommendation I'm all ears. The car only has 97k miles and I'm planning on keeping it forever. I can honestly say that, except for an 86 RX7, this is the most reliable car I've owned. The exhaust is due to abuse (just call me Captain Nemo). This car is built much better than the much more expensive Sebring that I bought new and no longer own. I've been watching a lot of "pimp my ride" so I'm itching to start modding this thing. I wouldn't have guessed when I bought it that there were a lot of mod kits out there for this econo-box. Because of its reliability and my long term outlook I may be willing to drop a decent amount on an exhaust upgrade, if it is worth it. I'd appreciate any input.
