Engine Swap Help???

I think my seals are shot in my 1.5L 1995 protege dx, when I start it there is enough smoke to fill my neighborhood. I am not a mechanic, so I would have a friend fix it for me. Is there anything that you can recommend doing while the engine is open for more power? cam? anything? At the same time I may be able to get engines at a good cost. Can anyone tell me what I can swap to? Any advice or comments would help. Thanks!!

If you really want to replace the engine, you can always replace it with another 1.5 liter, but I would recommend replacing it with the 1.8 from the ES model. The 1.8 has more power stock (obviously) and has more options for modifications. If you do swap in a 1.8 you will need the ECU from the ES, as well as motor mounts, wiring harneses, etc etc. The best thing to do would be to find a wrecked ES and take everything from it. Oh, and I think you will need the tranny from the ES as well.

As for the 1.5, there arent as many performance options. If anything is done to a 1.5, its probably custom. You can get your cams regrinded, intake, and work done on your intake manifold. To some, the power to dollar ratio is garbage, but its all up to you. If it were up to me, I would go ahead and try to get the 1.8 put in.... my 2 cents.

I dont think you need an engine swap. You probably need new seals/gaskets, or have your pistons rings replaced. When they begin to leak, gas mixes with oil, and there will be more smoke than steam locomotive. Hope that helps.

it depends also on what color the smoke is..

if its blue its most likely ur valve seals or piston rings

if its white its most likely a head gasket or something of that nature

if its black ur running very rich
