engine swap

i didnt know if i should put this in the 1st gen or the 2nd gen forum, but here goes. i have a 97 pro lx, wit a shitser 1.5 litre engine in her. i have a friend who had a 93 pro lx, & ordered the j-spec engine off of corksport.com, & unfortunatley totaled his car 4 days before his appt to get in put in @ my dads car lot. hes willin to sell it to me for $800. so, since i have a 97, i was wondering if i could swap them out, like also wonderin if ne1 has done this before. god only know how much of a n00b i am to engine swaps, so please help me. im tryin to learn here. finaly, hes gonna sell it for 900 on ebay if not to me, & hes gonna list it on the 10th of next month. thanx in advance.

as far as i know i'm the only one in the US who has. swapping the bpt into a 2nd gen isn't worth your time or money. sure the engine is only 800$ but it isn't an easy swap. call corksport. they'll tell you how much of a bitch it is to install. prolly end up costing you over 6k$ including haltech ecu which you will need. btw your car will not pass smog.

Hi Patrick, this is John from Manila (Protegetech Philippines). Do you have a log of what you did? Would like to know more about the stuff you had to go through to get a BPT in. BTW is your car the early 2nd gen?

Thanks.

unfortunately i didn't log everything i did as we installed the BPT.

were there any specifics that you were inquiring about?

i have a 97.

BTW. on a side note. would you be able to get the rear sun visor and ship it to the US?

I hear you on that , I need to talk to some guys over there about possibly getting some jspec fog lights ..

jdm clip on ebay

as you guys probably know there's those 4 clips on ebay with bpt motors for sale. they come with the tranny, ecu, harness, etc(the whole front end). would it be possible to just transport everything from that clip into the gen2 pros? just switch out the tranny?
this is just an idea.
might take out a small loan(2grand) and just buy it for my 95.??

The problem is you need custom mounts as 2gen 1.5 is not the same engine/chassis family as a 1.8 2gen. This is still needed even if you have the frt clip. If you started with a 1.8 2 gen it 'could" be easier.

mazdaspeed motor mounts

mazdaspeed motor mounts from corksport or anywhere else would work...no real big deal.
so how far from reality would it be, to put the clip into the 1.5L engine bay?
thx

nope-nope-nope

differences between 1.5 and 1.8 2nd gen..
-wire harness (engine)
-mass airflow sensor
-computer(cpu)
-distributor(1.5 & 1.8 use different plugs on disty, but 1.5 disty plugshould be able to be used with custom plug from 1.5 harness,adapted to 1.8 harness.)(I will find out soon,waiting for my 1.8pro harness to come).
-------->that's all the differences I can think of for now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

as for my thoughts on a GTX engine in a protege 95 and later

-- You can use the mounts from Your current 1.5L or 1.8L Protege.
- You would need the passenger brace --which wraps around the engine and connects to the back of the engine.
--As seen infig a
-You will want to also use your factory rear mount also.
-- as seen in fig b
- If you choose to you can use the factory tranny.
this is the mount ---> fig C

-------> 2nd Gen Tranny Options <---------
----> we have the G Series tranny on the 95 1.8 Protege's
----> we have the F Series tranny on the 95+ 1.5/96+1.8's
----> we have the G Series tranny on the (I think 95-97 kia sephia 1.8)

-- with all of these trannies the 1.5L/1.8L engine mount will work just fine. On my G Series Kia tranny, all the mount holes were the same as on my F mazda tranny,. Only differences are the G-has more or less(I forgot) splines than the F tranny. and the kia uses a different spedo cable plug, so you have to take that off and switch the mazda unit with it.

-- Also the G uses a different flywheel, which you can get from www.car-part.com or you could call mazdarecyc. and get it for cheap. Axles would more than likely be different also so that is an added expense..

-----------------> Problems I see with using a GTX motor<-------------

----> the ignition system is totally different.

-- 1st gens have a 5th wire that runs from the center of the disty to a coil on the side of the frame/chassis-- as seen in fig d

-- also the 2nd gens and 1st gens start differently, from what Patrick(GTX 2nd gen) was telling me the 1st gens start from the crank and 2nd gen's don't. -- I have noticed that I hear my 323 start different than my protege would.

-- I would have to email Derrick to find out about this--or you could-- due to him working on the GTXed 2nd gen.

-- 2nd problem, the GTX Harness would not plug into the 2nd gen interior harness. I don't see this happening and Patrick also said that his was not able to be pluged in -- thus using the haltech system

-- 3rd problem, you could get a BP from a 2nd gen - use a 2nd gen harness ( if you are lucky enough to find one), pull the block and add forged internals (if needed) and much like psuedo said the NA BP has a head that flows better. But then you have to source out the turbo and so forth..

-- 4th problem , this would be downtime and also the fact that you don't know how many problems you will run into with this swap.. It could end up costing you more than you expect...

oh well .. took me a while to write this --
hope you guys find this usefull

The GTX rear tranny mount bolts to the lower member that goes from frt to back and 2 gen bolts to the subframe and the arm in fig A is what I mean that it is mounted differently, But I stand corrected about the mounts I was thinking of the brackets when I said mounts -My bad. With a 1.8 2 gen the engine will straight swap bolt in. If you have a GTX frt clip ecu and harnesses are also there so the big concern would be where the harness goes to the interior harness you would need access to GTX and 2 gen wiring manuals for this mess. There would also be some wiring concerns with the fuse panel under the hood and the harness that runs in the drivers fender. From what I can think of now the wiring is the real bitch of the swap. Since its been done before now it would prove easier than the first one .Corksport would be the guys to listen to -they did it so the rest of use could only try and guess the problems. I think Bruce is going the better route custom turbo on a bp swap ,but a 2 gen GTX is da bomb.

yeah you can use that same bracket, the rear engine mount bracket. But to be honest, I wouldn't bother with the GTX in my protege , just to much of a hastle for me to go through ..
I like the 96 that I have with the compression ratio of 9:1 (if i am not mistaken) and I also do have the gtx turbo and manifold, and injectors from the GTR..

I called corksport a while ago and spoke to Derrick and was basically asking him about that swap GTX-->2nd gen and he was saying that it was a real headach cause of the rear intake manifold also, and wiring and it not working with the interior gauges .. He also said a BP from a 2nd gen would be plug and play and much easier to put in the car. (which is so true)..

I just had to take it a bit further and get the oil cooler that the 1st gen LX's come with, I got the hoses and bolts and nut from the dealer, I am just waiting those peaces to come in from the dealer then install them on the engine and then drop the engine in the car---- ofcourse I am still waiting for the wire harness so that will be put i n after the engine..

Derrick replied to my email and said that the motor would fit in ... Just getting it to run is a real bitch and a half ... and trust me ... I believe him .. the pre 94 and the above 95's .. start totally different .. it is a totally different sound when then start.. the pre 94 sounds like it's on a starter box for some odd reason ..
