Engine from 3rd gen into 2nd gen Protege
 

Has anyone ever tried to put a 2.0l FS engine from a 3rd generation Protege into a 2nd gen Protege?

I'm curious because I want to start a bit extreme project with my next car, wich will probably be a 2nd gen Protege

I would think if you're willing to do a custom swap like that that it might be more beneficial for you to look into swapping in a V6 maybe a KL-ZE from a MX6/probe. Both will be custom but the power of the V6 is much better than any of the fs-de engines.

Maybe this is just TOO obvious but why not a BP swap....they did COME in some 2nd gens, so it's kinda made to fit.... and stock for stock the BP is a better engine than the FS

I've thougt about the KL-ZE swap, but because the protege, or 323 sedan as it is sold here, wasn't originally fitted with a v6 it's illegal (don't ask why).

The 1.8 engine is a bp engine, so only the head, intake manifold and header have to be swapped from a 1st gen protege or 323 hatchback and you have 130 hp.

But I want something legal and what someone else doesn't have.

Right now I'm just looking what my options are with such a car

yeah, i'm in the same boat.. i have a 97 protege LX (1.5L) and it needs a new engine, or to rebuild mine. what kind of options do i have? i'm not sure what would fit in my car, and i was wonderin if anyone else had any suggestions. money is tight, so anything under 1500 for an engine and labor would be nice. oh yea, i'm lookin to go a lot faster.. so anything that has good power is what i'm after also. thanks!

Don't bother. Just do the BP swap.

i've got just a stock 97 protege LX engine.. 1.5L. how much is a bp swap, and what kinda power do they get?

Turbo the 1.5L. Apparently the strong bottom end which was based off a turbo 1.5 gives it more end potential than the 1.8L at high boost. I'm mostly just curious to see how true that is.

A stock second gen BP has 122hp and 117 ftlbs of torque.
There are too many factors to consider before one can say it will cost XXX dollars.
That is something that YOU need to research yourself and decide wether or not its worth YOUR money and time.

The z5 is worthless. Its better off as a boat anchor than a performance engine.
The stock bottom end 1.8l record is 399WHP on a miata.
Thats roughly 420 at the flywheel

Y'know, I have no idea where I heard that....I just remember I was doing some research on Protege tuning one night and came across that...some tuner company I think was saying how they tuned one or something...
I think they were talking about how it has more potential to last under extreme boost conditions...heck I saw a 600+ hp Integra on TV the other night at 20-ish psi so y'know, it's all in the tuning I guess.
Which makes me wonder...why is the 1.5 so weak? Performance is all about efficiency, so everything has potential in theory.

nobody said the 1.5L is weak.....it is just not capable of mind-numbing power...I'm sure it would handle a good amount of boost. it has a short stroke and probably some fat rods, but the 1.8L BP is a well proven,extremely strong, boost happy engine and has a good amount of performance parts available. It's going to make more power with the same amount of mods than a Z5...the 2nd gen was kind of the step child of Protege's with that crappy Z5...it just makes VERY little power
