Crankshaft Bolt
 

Hello All--
I am new at this message board thing, so please stick with me...

I have a 1995 Mazda Protege, 1.5L I love it but that is beside the point.

I am working to replace the water pump and in doing so I need to take off the timing belt. While it is off I was just going to replace it because mileage is getting up there.

Anyway, I have the thing torn apart but I cannot get the large nut (13/16...I know, it isnt metric, but it fits better than those sockets that are) off of the crankshaft assembly meaning I cant get the timing belt off. I now have it in fifth gear, on the ground and I am pulling with a breaker bar harder than ever before and I cannot get that darn bolt to budge. I am not a huge guy, but I know that the amount of force I put into getting that bolt off should suffice twice over for any bolt on that car. I dont have access to the flywheel or I would block it and it is imperative to get this bolt off due to the plate that protects (and hides) the crankshaft sprocket.

Anyway, my question to anyone and everyone out there is...is there a trick to this bolt? is it possible it could be reverse-threaded? am I overlooking anything at all??? Please if anyone knows the answer email me immediately!! I spent all freaking afternoon on that damn thing. And nice afternoons dont come around all too often.

Impact gun works wonders
If you don't have one and the car is still driveable, take it down to a local garage. Have them break it loose and then mildly retighten so you can get it loose with air toold when you get home.

get a big piece of pipe, put it over the breaker bar.

I went out an bought an impact gun that works off of air, but I dont think it is strong enough. I also tried a bar over the breaker bar and nothing. The bar cant be too long or it will hit the ground when I am turning it.
