Anyone know how to check the code for the check engine light?
I was hoping some of you might know if there is a way to check to see what engine code I'm throwing. It's on my wife's Mazda Protege LX, it's a 1998.
I have a civic and we can check our engine light codes, so I thought it might be the same. |

1996 and later Proteges have been designed using the OBDII system. It's not a simple process of grounding the TEN terminal and check for the number of blinks. You will need an OBDII scanner/diagnostic tool (I've seen one as low as $160US). Make sure that the scanner is meant for Japanese cars since GM, Ford, & Chrysler have different protocols. You can also find a local mechanic that will have the scanner tool. I got charged $28CAN to have mine checked and see what the error was. Oh, and it only takes less than 5 minutes to check it. Fixing the problem is a different matter, of course.
