What does the hold button do?

This may be a dumb question but what does the hold button do on the tranny? This is my first Mazda and I am unfamiliar with the terminology. I am guessing that it holds the tranny in whatever gear it is in?

Also, there is a vibration in the tranny when the engine is cold but seems to smooth out once warmed up. Is this common?

Thanks,

It holds the car in the existing gear. Useful for cornering during spirited driving, when it is important to not have a gearchange.

If you engage "hold" when in Drive, it upshifts at low (maybe 2000RPM) engine speed and will not downshift in response to stepping on the gas pedal, only downshifts when vehicle slows alot. Useful in snow, but car can bog down some without the downshifts.

in other word over drive

I forgot to mention: if hold is engage while in drive, it downshifts from the highest gear and prevents entering high gear.

So, from my observations, "hold" locks out overdrive and prevents downshifting other than 'manual' downshifting . In drive, it also causes upshifts to occur at fairly low RPM.
