tranny oil change

Hi there,

I have a question about changing the tranny oil on my 92 1.8L DOHC auto protege.

The car has been in the wifes family since new - she has had it for about 5 or 6 years. It is currently my daily driver winter beater - The car has 330,000kms on it and the engine still seems to have lots of life in it.

the problem with the auto is some times on the highway the car will seem to go from 4th gear to 3rd and kind of bounce back and fourth (seems to only be on the cold mornings or nights). My typical cruising speed is 140Km/h, so for example at 140kmh the tach will usaully be at 3k even but will occasionally jump up to 3300-3400rpms and then down to 3k again - but i can tell that it is not really going into 3rd gear.

I have never changed the tranny oil since we have owned the car but I have heard that at this point (330,000k) an oil change may do more harm than good - is this true or should I still go ahead and change the oil?

Whats a good oil for this tranny and is there a filter or magnet that has to be cleaned too?

Thanks again for the help!!

I would change the transmission filter and gasket.
It can't hurt it the car only improve it. There is a filter and gasket on ebay for $8.00US. I got mine from this guy. He is good to deal with. Then drain the fluid, clean out the magnets in the pan, change the filter and gasket and you should be good to go. The automatic transaxle fluid that you use also can be used as your power steering in the gen 1's. If you need more detailed steps on how to do it, or can't find the filter on ebay, just reply back here.

What's the dealer cost on the OEM filter and gasket? Is it really that big a savings?

Yep, it is big savings, at least where I live.
OEM filter : $52
OEM gasket : $20

Then again, i'd go with this savings if quality of filter/gasket good.

I have the seller's email from ebay where I got my filter and gasket for $8.00 plus $3.95 for shipping. I will email him and tell him to post some more of the filter and gasket sets for the gen 1 pros.

Did the tranny fluid and filter change

I did the Timing belt and the tranny fluid and filter this past weekend. the T belt was easy, but the dropping the tranny pan was murder. There is a main cross member that runs right across the pan - and in order for me to get the pan down and out i had to get a bar in there and lift the engine up - then the get the new filter on there while putting the pan up...it started to get dark so i wasn't too happy near the end.. but its done now and the tranny seems to shift more smoothly...

Thanks for your help...
