Tach add-on placement
 

I have a 91 DX, without tachometer, and was thinking about adding one of the aftermarket ones for about $125. If anyone has done this, where is a good spot to place it? I was thinking about the steering column but don't know if there would be problems drilling holes there. Top of dash is another possibility, but it is all foam plastic and might not hold anything that is screwed in.

I was thinking of adding a small tach. I was going to mount it 'inverted' by attaching it to the a-pillar far back along the dash and windshield.

Go to a junk yard, and get a cluster with a tach. its oem look, never over 30$, and really easy to install.

For those of us with 323s, it's unfortuantely not that easy.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get a cluster for cheap. Everyone wants at least $30, and then they wanna charge me $40 to ship it. I know it doesn't cost forty dollars to ship something that small, so I know they're keeping the extra money just to make a quick buck. So what's the secret? None of my local parts yards have any imports, and the only one that has the guage cluster wants $60!! Stupid Freaks... WHAT'S THE SECRET???? :dunno:

Two questions on the cluster:

1. Would the odometer fit in the same place or would I have to use the odometer from the cluster.

2. How about the sending unit to the cluster. I would have to get that as well, wouldn't I?

I'm in the same spot as you guys are....but I bought a tach from autometer size is 2 5/8" and mounted it on top of the steering column. I blocks part of the temp gauge and the speedo, but the tach is small enough for you to see it. plus it's great since it's in the line of sight, if you're checking your speed or fuel/temp. Hope this helps.

Parts between clusters aren't swappable. so you'll need to swap the complete cluster unit with your.
so, the millage will be different, because you cant keep your odometer unit. But clusters are "plug n play" all the 4 connectors behind are the same and they plug at the same location.

I got a cluster off an LX the other day (junkyard) I got it for a total of $37.00, worth it in my part, I personally think the add-on tachs are exactly that, TACKY!! I'll leave it to the riced out Honda's!!

But anyways, Once you find all the screws to pull and the way to wiggle the old cluster and the cluster bezel out than you have it made.. My car went from 105,700 miles to a Beautiful 52,250 mile sin the matter of minutes!! Can't beat that.... lol...

Thought I would throw in my 2 cents...

My cluster with tach is finally on the way from Minnesota thanks to Rick's Auto Parts. I got it for $29 shipped! Took a lot of shopping around but I finally found the deal I was looking for. I'll never pay my local junkyard $75 for something I can get at a third of the price. :D Unfortunately my cluster has 165,000 miles on it, so when I switch the mileage will be going up. But if I ever sell the car, I'll just put the tachless cluster back in. It's like my mileage is frozen forever!! How convenient! ;)

hey all...

i myself have just replaced my 90 SE/DX tach with a 91 LX tach. it was a biooootch because my steering column doesnt tilt. i squeezed the crap out of my dash cluster bezel ring and finally got it off. then i pinched and scratched the crap out of my forearm trying to detach the 4 plugs behind the dash cluster...

when i finally got the DX cluster off, i realized the speedo cable connector was going to be really hard to connect because it's so short. i tried several times...took a break several times...and then it dawned on me to try it another way...

i reached from under the dash, squeezed my arm around an air hose and curled it back into the area behind the dash cluster. and BINGO...i was able to connect the speedo cable...it worked fine save for a bulb blown right in the middle of the display but i can deal with it...im not touching that thing for a while after this experience.

but WOOHOO i have a tach now. and a low fuel light. i got it for 40 bucks with a warranty. not too bad.

your low fuel light works???? how ??? cause mine doesn't light up...

My Low Fuel Light doesn't light up either.. After he said that I thought well maybe my light is burnt out, but I sure as hell am not gonna pull the cluster out of the dash just to replace that light..

I really don't think we have the low fuel sensor in our tanks as the LX does..

I don't think we have hte low Washer Fluid Sensor Either..

Anyone else Low Lights work on there DX with the swapped LX Cluster??

Did this come standard on later models?

Only some came standard with the tach.. I have a '94 DX and It did not have a tach, so I swapped it from an LX..

Some did, some Didn't!!
