SOHC or DOHC Engine? How do I determine?
Can anyone help me determine whether my '93 Protoge DX has a SOHC or a DOHC engine? I do know that it is a 1.6L. I'm really at a loss here as to how to find out.
Thanks, Nathan |

Thanks, Nathan Look at the Valve cover and determine that matter.. If it is wide, with 2 pulleys at the belts, (for the cams) than it is DOHC, if it only has 1 pulley at the belts than it is a SOHC.. Of course I am talking about the top pulleys (cam pulleys).. also, the SOHC has an aluminum Valve Cover as the DOHC I believe has a plastic cover over thier valve cover.. also, do your plug wires go into the top of the engine or the front above the exhaust manifold?? I belive the DOHC goes into the top as the SOHC goes into the front.. I own the "94 DX, as far as I know, all DX's (american) came with the SOHC engine ONLY!! that is why I ask if it is totally stock.. The LX model came with the DOHC engine.. THis should clear up any questions you might have.. if I am wrong at all anyone? please let me know! |
I don't think it's a 1.6 liter. It should be 1.8L SOHC since it's DX

kinda easy to tell it will say dohc 16 valve in big letters on the valve cover and its not a 1.6 its a 1839cc or 1.8 liter sohc 16 valve motor and revs to 6 grand if ur gonna post about that in the future for a tach :-) ...Jon 93 lx
