rx-7 vaf question

I have just done the mod the car runs fine yadda yadda yadda.... but I want to know what happens if I relocate the hose going to the "H" box and then remove the the "H" box I need another inch or two in the intake pipe. The reason for me needing more room is I also have a prm intake on my car. Oh yeah OMG theres more power through the whole rpm range not just at the top.

The black box resonator helps out the low end....there's been several threads about this.
So if there's any way to keep it...twould be good :)

I'd like to know your setup....So you still have the stock rubber intake 'tube' and black box; now connected to the RX7 VAF with the PRM CAI extension, right?? How did you fit the larger VAF to the black box? Were you able to use the same VAF filter adaptor on the RX7 VAF? How did you tune the VAF; just open the cover and adjust the settings? Any black smoke coming out the exhaust at high rpms??
Just curious....

yeah just connected it all. Well the prm intake came with the correct fitting for the h box the vaf, but I need just a lil more room. I tuned it out side of the car too, I have read alot of post on the swap and it seems to me that 5 clicks is what everyone has done so thats what I did. I runs fine at any rpm range and it runs STRONG. It really was worth the 35 bucks. Its still the stock rubber piece too but I'm thinking about changing and making my own intake. I'm going to cut the intake pipe down just a little like wil did to get his to fit I think that will solve my problem

I would post a pic of how it looks but I can't figure out how too

RX7 VAF is 3" diameter (Pro VAF is 2.5")
HBox is about 2.75", but a soft style hose adapter in the 2.5" > 3" config will work best. (the 2.5" side going on the HBox)

my set up goes like this.

TB to 2.5" intake tube = 2.5" > 2.5"
2.5" intake tube to HBox = 2.5" > 2.5"
HBox to VAF, 2.5" > 3"
VAF to CAI tube 3" > 3"
CAI to filter = 3"

i found enough room to keep the HBox in each of my custom intakes, this last one i didn't add the HBox, simply for comparison. I plan to add the HBox next weekend and see what the differences are.

Also, if you relocate the coolant overflow bottle, you can use that room to angle the PRM to get everything to fit easily.

click here for my site and check the "how-to" section. The intake, CAI and VAF info is all there.

If you will email your pics, I will post them in this thread. My email is hrucker@mail.utexas.edu. I am interested to see what it looks like.

Does it run smoothly at idle, etc?

Best regards,

mazda disciple June-25th-2002 10:10 PM

about 5hp gain at 6000rpm and stays steady to redline.

Mazda Disciple pics

In the interest of size, I had to make the images slightly less sharp than they originally were. Also, to save time for those of you with 28.8 modems, I have linked the other pics, so just click on the links and you can see other pics and closeups of Mazda Disciple's intake photos. Thanks to Mazda Disciple. BTW, the picture at the very bottom in the signature is my lame stock Pro, not Mazda Disciple's.

What size tube did you use for the CAI? I got one from JC Whitney and the radius was too big. Is it 3"? What size filter are you using on that too?

mazdaspeedwest June-28th-2002 09:43 PM

i used a 3" 90degree bend from an Integra intake for my CAI. I also used a rather large (6"dia. x 8"long IIRC) filter, but i relocated my coolant overflow tank. If you go to www.knfilters.com and click on universal applications, you'll find 2 or 3 that are plenty small enough to fit without relocating the coolant overflow tank.

Also IIRC, the PRM is a 3" pipe.

im curious if this swap would help a sohc automatic. someone wrote about a 5hp gain at 6000rpm. my automatic automatically shifts at 5500rpm. so would this swap still help an auto sohc?
