Replacing Shocks

Hi All,

I'm a total newbie when it comes to Mazdas as I'm mostly into Honda/Acura. My little sister has a 91 Protege that needs shocks badly! I tried a search but I didn't find much. We'll be using either stock shocks or Monroe replacements. So does anyone have any tips for this? Like if your doing rear shocks on a Integra you almost always break the lower shock bolts trying to get it off. Anything else should be changed while I'm in there?

actually...the protege has *struts* - not shocks....do a search and you should find plenty of threads ;)

the ZX2 S/R struts evidently work fine with the stock springs and they are cheap!!! ~$175 for ALL 4; check out mazdaspeedwest's 'profile' - he's got a link to his site where he details the info on the swap.

oops I meant struts. Wasn't thinking straight. Are the ZX2s "drop-in" replacements with no modifications needed? I don't want to have to modify anything on the car since it's not mine. Shes not into performance at all either. So are these real stiff like aftermarket shocks?

they DO require modification/they are stiffer....

and if she's not into performance...i guess Monroe's would be as good as anything.....

its an ez job esp if you've done it before; and there should be NO problem with breaking bolts ;)

you might want to get new thrust bearings for the front stuts; they're plastic and could prob use replacing.

Right, any Autozone, Pep Boys will have something. Although the price is pretty darn comparable.....

Just skip over the modification section, the rest is the same.
