Replacement Sunroof '91 LX

Does anyone have any information as to where I can find a good replacement sunroof for a 1991 LX. My local junkyard doesn't have any still in good condition.

Also, how hard is it to remove the sunroof panel?

Thanks.

Grab a glass sunroof from an Escort. It's a direct fit. You have two options on this. First, you can swap the entire sunroof assembly from the Escort (which is what I did) and you will end up with the sliding sun shade and the plastic trim pieces. Second you can just swap the glass. This is easier, but you wont have the sun shade. That doesn't really matter though, I just ripped the sun shade out as you don't really need it because the glass is tinted. However you will have two tab thingys that stick out on each side. They hold up the shroud from the moonroof on the Protege. They are not present if you use the Escort assembly. I vote for the first method. It's a little more work, but IMO it's worth it. The only draw back to using the Escort assembly is that the dome lights are different, so make sure to grab that too or you wont be able to mount up the one from your Protege properly.

Removing the sunroof assembly isn't that hard, but you might want a helper...it's alot heaver than you would think. You will have to remove the headliner first, and then after that it's just an issue of like 6? bolts I think, wire harness, and the water drain tubes. It helps to have someone hold it in place when you bolt it back up. Same for reinstalling the headliner. I have a how-to on removing the headliner on www.clubprotege.com I'll list it below (1st link) with a couple other usefull threads.

Thanks for the help Marc.
I'll check my local junkyard. Does the headliner just clip-in like most of the rest of the interior, and if I get the EGT headliner I need the EGT dome lights as well right?
I couldn't access the first thread link to check your headliner removal how-to.

Your sunroof looks really nice, much better than the factory metal panel.

The Escort headliner won't fit, it's a little different in shape.
