question about the seat belt of 94 mazda protege

Hi everyone, I just bought a 94 mazda protege DX yesterday. This is my first car and I'm really a freshman. Everything in the car is OK except the seat belts.

When I enter the car, the automatic shoulder belt move to the right position and then I buckle the lap belt. But I found that if I pull the belt (shoulder belt or lap belt) suddenly by my hands, unlike other cars, they don't lock up (no matter the engine is running or not)! I tried this several times but nothing changed. I really doubt if the seat belts like these can save my life in an accident.

Can anyone tell me if this is a normal situation or something wrong with the seat belts. Do I need to do something with it?

Thanks a lot!

it should lock in place if you press the brake

heh heh... I've had enough near misses to tell you that in the event that you do have to slam on your brakes in an accident your seatbelts will work fine.... just make sure you got the lapbelt on or you might find yourself in a slouched position when your braking has stopped.

I'm new here but I never have problems with the belts not locking up. My problem is, when buzzing around town embarassing more expensive cars, the seat beat warning lite and buzzer goes off everytime my body shifts weight in the seat?:(

Basically it locks if the car has a lot of foward inertia, don't think it's actually connected to the brakes, but you get the idea.
