Protege is too loud
 

Hello, I'm new to the forums, and i have a problem. I put a new muffler on my 91 protege and it sounds great outside, but inside the car it resonates like hell, i can barely hear my radio. I'd say it's loudest at about 3000-3500 rpms. Please tell me there's a quick fix to this prob.

WHat kind of muffler is it?, if its like the "coffee" can style, you can usually get a silencer...

or just danamat the whole car.... cost around $600

yeah, it's pretty much like a straight cylinder, much smaller then the stock muffler.

Did they remove your resonators and cat?? I mean you only replaced the muffler and it's SMALLER than you STOCK one?? Man...that sounds like a back pressure problem....but who knows for sure??

the catalytic converter is still there... The car's just really freaking loud! My friend put the same exact muffler on his saturn and his is way quieter. in fact, his catalytic converter is hollow inside...

Backpressure. At least it sure sounds it. Your friends is quieter because his cat is hollowed out. It reduces backpressure among other things and acts as a second resonator. All of your mounts are good, right? The rubber isn't gone and the piping isn't forced on any metal?

every car has different exhaust sounds. Put the stock back on if you want quiet or you can install another set of resonator to keep the noise level down. Im thinking the exhaust tip of the muffler is under the car thats why its making that doop tone noise. You should have it stick out just a lil so the sound won't stay underneath the vehicle. i think i'll look into resonators. and yeah, the tip is almost all the way under the car. Would wrapping the pipe help at all? I don't wanna end up going back to the muffler shop...

Scramble, if you had the muffler installed by a shop TAKE IT BACK TO THEM! They should know enough to have the pipe stick out from underneath the car. You paid good money for them to do it and they should stick by their work.
If you did it yourself, look into an extension or something. Wrapping it might help, but I doubt it. If the exhaust is coming out under the vehicle it will resonate under the car no matter what you do. Get the tip of the end pipe/muffler out from under the car a tad.

I took a trip from Montreal to Toronto, and got a headake from the exhaust running in my ear for for 5 hours, but the silencer shut it up, on the way back it was fine
