My woes so far

I'm guessing my '90 323 is a BG because the chassis# starts with this, so I'm posting this here...

Fanbelt wore out yesterday. It was a wrong too long belt on it. Have put the right belt on now, and things work fine.

Sometimes it idles too high (1500rpm) after starting up on a warm engine, and sometimes it drops to 500+rpm. I suspect there's a "switch" of some sorts that might be causing this. Some other engines I've seen have an idle switch to tell the ECU when one let go of the throttle... Anything like that on this B6?

I have some valvenoise with a cold engine. Is this a familiar problem and is there anything besides an oil/filter change can fix?

My interior light doesn't work in DOOR mode. Trunk light is also gone. I believe these used to work, but am not too sure. As far as I could see the fuses were ok.

Any tips on these subjects are most welcome. Thanks in advance :)

I guess the high idling is normal on a cold start mine will idle at 2000 and when warm sometimes 1200, my door light doesnt work either, i guess there may be something in the system that goes bad after a while, valve noise used to be a prob of mine, turns out i needed a front crank seal to stop a bad oil leak but im sure a new fitler change would do some good also, dependong on how old it is?

It's got about 160k miles on it, and any previous history is unknown. Doubt any seals has been replaced. It doesn't leak as far as I can see. Just sweats a bit around the righthand front side.

I'm also suspecting that it runs a bit rich since milage doesn't seem to be too great. I've just done 340 miles since full tank and I'm getting real close to the empty mark, but still no yellow light though. Is there any way of adjusting the mixture? I guess it's supposed to be automatically adjusted by the ECU. So if there's no way of adjusting it, I am thinking maybe some sensor is out. Maybe engine coolant temp sensor, or lambda sensor...? Any ideas?

The running rich theory is from the poor milage and the fact that it hesitates at various revs. And it seems a bit too slow to pick up on low revs (below 2000).

I investigated the door light a bit more. The rear right door switch works and turns on the interior lights. The rear left one is busted. So I'll disassemble them and see if any wires are disconnected.

Im not a very smart person when it comes to fuel mixtures and running rich, but as far as the pulling, pick up, acc (what ever you wanna call it) mine WOULD give you a kick in the rear when pushed but pulled the most between 2200 to about 3800 those were the Rpms that seemed to deliever most power for mine...but mine's tranny has went out so thats why i said it WOULD...lol

:) Thats too bad... No fun without a tranny.
I guess thats how mine responds as well. And it seems to pick up again before 5000 and then go al the way out. Im growing on the car and starting to like it a lot.

I have a question about the fue pump. Is it easy to get at? That and the filter I want to check and clean since it kept stopping on hard right downhill turns when I had less than 1/4 tank left...

ghettopro December-20th-2004 12:09 PM

Mine used to do that before i had the pump and filter replaced but now it does it when the needle is dead on E, so im not sure because we have modified the fuel pick up in the tank also i dont know how to tell you how becuase my dad did that stuff most everything eles was simple but it seemed to fix the problem.
