Lighter hood or Inspection failure?
 

My friend told me about a way of making the hood lighter. He said, you can cut off the frame, under the hood, and use hood pins to latch it down. I was thinking that I would do that, and just leave the areas where the frame of the hood touches the frame of the car so the hood is even with the fenders....But, question is...would this be illegal? Not sure if that is a stupid question, I've never heard of doing that before, though. So, I figured I should ask around before I do it. I wouldn't want to be told it's illegal and I can't drive my car due to a safety hazard of some kind.

check your local laws...this would vary from state to state....if you want a lighter hood, get a fiberglass or cf one....cutting up the frame just sounds risky

Yeah, that's what I thought. But, if it'll save me $250-$300....I figure, that money could go to paint job or DOHC engine.

Hi, if you cut the frame that is under the hood you won't save any weight, it will be a risky thing to do, I don't think it is ilegal because if you make a new one of fiberglass anyway it's a soft material and if you cut it you will save less than a pound.

wow, you're gonna lose more than a pound, although probably not enough to ever notice a difference, and you must not be too familiar with fiberglass, as its a very hard material. That's why it likes to crack, because it can be very brittle if not laid properly. Forget the hood, devote your time to something more rewarding, and avoid looking like a ricer at the same time!

to the basic effect of what was posted above. Cutting your hood supports ranges on the kinda dumb side of the spectrum. without the supports holding up the sheet metal it is just that sheet metal. it will be as flimsy as paper and you wotn lose enough weight to make it worthwhile.

if you want to loose weight on your car, go on a diet, because that will yield better weight loss than cutting out 4lb of mettal.

If you are serious about weight reduction, remove the glass, replace it with lexan. removing passenger side seat will yeild more of a weight loss, as would removing all the interior trim.

Just lose 5 pounds, Take the passenger seat out. Stop hauling fat chicks. You wont get enough weight off the hood to bother. If you do it will prob flap around and dent very easy

Supposedly you gain a tenth in the quarter for every hundred pounds lost.
YOu'd have to do that tothe hood, trunk lid, doors, and gut the interior . You might gain .15

Ricer is just a slang term for those people that do really cheesy stuff to their cars, like adding hood pins for no reason, big fart can mufflers, wings that stick up higher than the roof of the car, etc...

oooo.......I was going to put a wing on my car but decided not to i guess i made a good decision not to.......the only thing that i have done that comes close to that is the muffler on my car and that is b/c the old one sucked.......:cheers: :cheers: :shift:

i did that exact thing to my hood its just real flexible but it works my car weight is about 1200 i did alot of weight reduction though
