It is burning oil? because it depends on what you want, you can make an overhaul to that engine, it's a relayable engine. It has power and it is economy but if you want to change the engine, someone told me that in this car with a lot of work you can fit a mazda V6 2.5L that uses the MX-6, on the internet I saw this modification in the MX-3 and the platform of the Protege and the MX-3 are the same.

you can fit to following:

KL engines(mx6) but you need to swap for the mx3 k8's cross member and tranny

the k8 1.8L v6 (mx3) but you need to swap for the mx3 k8's cross member and tranny

the BPDET from the GTX or the GTR

the B8 1.8L sohc (protege dx)

the b6 1.6L sohc (323)

the B6-DET 1.6L dohc turbo from the usdm 323 GTX

i however suggest you have your current engine rebuilt from the crank up.
