Help please - bad bearing/CV?

Hello all,
I replaced my brakes on my 1991 DX this weekend. The rotor was seized on both sides so it required a good deal of whacking with a hammer to knock it off. I think this may have done some damage as now I have a grinding noise when I turn at low speeds (happens turning in both directions). This is only when going forward, NOT in reverse. I took it into a shop and they believe that I need new wheel bearings on both sides to the tune of $500, but are unsure if that is actually the problem. I had initally thought it was the CV axles, as I know they are problematic on Protege's, and I figured if it were the bearings it would make the noise going forward, as well as in reverse. Can someone please help? I certainly don't want to pay half the value of car car to only possibly fix the problem. Thanks guys.

Are both wheels? I think you could damage the CV because the bearings has nothing to do when you are turning.
When you whack with the hammer, you did it only in one place?

Yeah, it seems like the noise is present on both sides. I hit the rotor from both sides trying to free it from the hub. The thing that puzzles me is that the noise isn't present when I'm going the same speed in reverse.

My left CV joint is making noise when i go strait and when i turn right and not in reverse, it makes a sound like klak, klak, klak, at any speed.
