Finally mid 16's

I am still not sure how but yesterday when I was making my last run before going home at the LACR 1/4 mile made it in 16.681 @ 80.7 MPH, I only got the chance to run 3 times. It was crouded and some car spilled oil on the strip so we had to wait like 20 min.
Besides I got there late due to traffic from L.A to Palmdale. My first run was with a Jetta V6, he had his hood open showing off his big ass engine. So off we went and I was ahead of him by about half a car when he pulled ahead of me, smelled like bottle to me........ I made it in 17.128, with a reaction time of 1.098. Then my second run was with a Acura Integra VTECH, and made it in 17.033, reaction time was 0.973 I wasn't gonna let the Integra leave me far behind and he didn't, we were about one car of difference, The guy looked at me like what the f....? and the 3rd run was again with the evil Jetta. I got to the yellow lights,(thinking this time I'm gonna kick some ass) got the engine @ 4000 rpm waiting for the green light and then ZOOM all the way down the 1/4 mile... now I'm sure about the bottle, The jetta again pulled ahead mysteriously.....But anyways to my surprise I made it in 16.681, this time with a reaction time of 0.732
I came back all the way back home with a smile on my face.....:p

So... are you ever gonna go turbo???

ManuelGz December-7th-2002 08:45 PM

I know it's the way to go but I want to see how far I can go with a N/A engine. If I can get to the mid 16's with a crappy clutch and almost with a stock engine I wonder what I can do with headers, fuel pressure reg, high flow cat converter, CAI system, maybe adjustable cam gears, a good clutch, bored throttle body, mmmmmmm what else?;)

Gene December-7th-2002 11:57 PM

What were the 60's?

You could get some pistons (maybe from Flyin Miata) that are about 11:1.... and some nice rods..... Port and polishing.....light flywheel....

Those would get ya some impressive times!! Good Luck to ya bro!!:D

ManuelGz December-8th-2002 11:00 AM

I will leave the pistons alone since it will prevent me from going turbo in the future, and just out of curiousity, Why do you eat paint?

itzkcatz December-8th-2002 11:15 AM

Just curious.... what are DOHC BP's capable of in NA form??

That depends. Racing Miatas are getting about 225hp out of their 1.8BPs. Of course, that's hardly streetable (14:1 compression).

With the stock ECU, probably 145-150 at the crank. Figure 125-130 at the wheels. With TEC-II/Haltech, different intake, P&P, and cams, probably as much as 180 hp or so.

itzkcatz December-9th-2002 12:12 PM

Ive read a post on here with some kid that claimed 160 hp with some mods ..but i think the way to go is turbo ...Jon 93lx

Loundarp December-9th-2002 02:13 PM

ManuelGz you have the 1.8 DOHC??? manual??

itzkcatz December-9th-2002 02:19 PM

Yes he does or so his pics say...Jon

Loundarp December-9th-2002 03:24 PM

16.6 is some nice number but with all mod he had done, he should run low 16????

itzkcatz December-9th-2002 03:29 PM

just strap a vj20 on it and run some 13's :-)

ManuelGz December-9th-2002 10:17 PM

Loundarp :
Yes I got a DOHC in the 323 5 speed with a cat back system as my only modification, besides the RX-7 AFM with the protege spring (instead of the original RX-7 spring) that gives tension to the flap door inside the Air Flow Meter. oh and my cone type air filter ofcourse.

PseudoRealityX:
It's good to know about the fuel presure regulator, I always had my doubts about it. Then the bored throttle body, I'm gonna take your word for it. The clutch I defenetely need it. The one I got is still good for every day driving. I'm gonna star looking for another gearbox too. Mine has pass 340,000 miles in it. As you'd understand it is a little noisy !!

I was surfing the Corksport page and found this:
Cork Sport peformance camshaft set
The Cork Sport performance cam set are brand new camshafts not regrinds. The specs are .352 lift and 205 duration at .050 lift for both intake and exhaust. The estimated gains on a mildy modified motor are 12 hp.
Price: $ 425.00
Speed is expensive !! But like it !!

It should be noted that he did that at LACR. 2710 feet above sea level. What that means is that you lose about 9.5% of your HP compared to sea level (only with a NA engine, or a turbo that is flow restricted at sea level, like a VJ-20 at 20+ psi).

Applying the track published correction factor, he's running 16.146 @ 83.4mph, but I think the trap speeds always seem a little low there (or maybe they are high at other tracks).

Loundarp December-10th-2002 09:33 AM

Davard, thanks for the explication, its make more sense now.
i live at the sea level and i did 15.952 @87.5mph with a 95gt with close to no mod.

Loundarp December-10th-2002 06:08 PM

i was realy happy wen i see this time. but i did some weight reduction. i removed rear seat, front seat, spare tire and half off tank of gaz. the only thing i had done on my engine is advance timing at 14, put a new stock air filter and removed the S under the filter and my cluch is not in good shape. need a act clutch :D

here the time slip, i'm number 15

http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/loundarp/drag_slip.jpg

back in topic, ManuelGz how much your car weight ???

ManuelGz December-10th-2002 07:27 PM

That's a good question, I was thinking of taking the car to a weight station and find out. It says on the door that it weights 3,300 lbs. I'm gonna put it on a diet, including my self !!

Davard December-10th-2002 07:29 PM

The non-spectacular 60 foot makes that 1/4 mile time and speed all the more impressive. My best (at LACR) is a 16.753@79.746mph, with a 2.379 60 foot. Corrected, that's still only 16.2 @ 82.4mph. I didn't remove anything other than the spare, though. My Protege probably weighs about 2700lbs with driver (2475 without). I'd imagine the 323 is at least 200lbs lighter.

Gene December-14th-2002 11:05 AM

GVWR

The weight on the door is GVWR, which is max allowable weight including car, passengers, and cargo. You would have to subtract weight capacity to get curb weight.

323 December-14th-2002 05:38 PM

Weight

As far as I know, the '90+ 323 weighs a little over 2200lbs stock.

323 (soon to be 1.8L DOHC 323)

Where did u get the Jdm headlights and courners?. Do u have pics of ur car?. Ur car sounds awesome but why r u using a sohc transmission? . Do u think its gonna hold 18psi ? .Jon 93 lx

ProtegeBG December-21st-2002 03:29 PM

it probably won't cuz it SUPPOSEd to hold no more than 200hp, BUT this li'l car is so underated that i dunno if i should go by that. later i'ma upgrade the tranny, the weakness someone told me is a certain pin that they makde it weak, i know a guy who changed the pin on his thunderbird's mazda G tranny like ours, and put a u brace and is holding 260+ so i'ma get him to do it, if not i'll get a GTX/GTR tranny.

Corksport has the JDM's for 250. really sweet.

If you can get into the egroups of Protegetech.com goto photos and carlos's 94 hybrid, i got the pix there, i'm working on a site to post all my pix on. or gimme ur addy and i'll send em to ya. i don't know how to post pix here. :( less ya'll can tell me.
