Engine Idling High

1.8L SOHC 1st. Gen. Manual says idle RPM should be around 750, my car is idling around 850 - 1000 rpm. Adjusted screw all the way in.

well, thats a hard one. that screw on the throttle body throws my engine anywhere from 550 on up to 1100, so aside from that, your timing is probably a little off. aside from taking it to the shop, i'd just say adjust the throttle cable position a little lower, that might help out a little bit.
peace

oh, a little side note, do you have any other problems with the car? do you leave it running a long time at idel and leave it set while you're off doing something, then i wouldn't personally worry about your idle, not a sign for anything i've replaced, and my whole ignition, fuel and air intake systems have been replaced on my car, so i see no problem in a high idle. peace

mine idles really low, at about 250-300rpms. it doesn't kill or hesitate at all though and the lights don't dim. think it's fine or should i raise it a bit? it sounds kinda cool though, it's got a little rumble almost to it.

Other than that the car runs fine. Could it be the Distributer cap and rotor (I've replaced them recently). Or could it be the spark plugs ( I replaced those recently - the ones I bought did not need any gaping).

Mine is solid as a rock at 750... i hear about people whose idle is wildly going from 200-1000 and people who have theirs too low and too high... and I've never had to do anything to mine. Dumb luck I guess.

WOAH! 250RPM? that's unbelievably low. Did u get that number from a diagnostic screen or are you using an approx. number from what u see on the tach? I doubt the engine would even stay ON at an idle THAT low.

250 rpm, your lights should be really dim lol. My lights dim around like 3-400 rpm.

sileighty21 May-8th-2003 06:45 AM

250rpm's is what i've noticed on the tach once the car is warmed up. when it starts up it sits at about 1000rpm, then lowers to around 250 after a few minutes, depending on the temp outside. i must have a strong electrical system or somethin cuz no light dimmage for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the tach's pretty inaccurate at such low RPM's.

mine idled at 2000 RPM because the idle air control valve was completely clogged with carbon. I took the throttle body off and cleaned it out real good and it idles fine now.

when my pro was running, 750 was the highest it would go at an idle, once the car was warmed up

My old 91 EGT.. 3k rpm.. beat that, AND something like 9 mpg/11 (?) highway..
