Did the protege ever share transmissions w/ the escort?

I know a few friends w/ zx2s and they all seem to have transmission trouble. I was wondering if any of the five speed proteges ever shared transmissions with older escorts or the newer zx2s.

not sure about that but I know the tranmssion in my 5spd protege5 is the same as the transmission in my 1990 Ford Taurus SHO, MX-6, MX-3,probe GT, etc.

Protoss July-5th-2004 02:44 PM

yes the 91-96 ford ESCORT GT is a mazda in ford clothing. the tranny, engine and ECU are all mazda parts and i will go on to state the obvious, the same mazda part in a ford, will fit in the Mazda.

trouble?

I always heard the sho had a relatively strong transmission so I assume that wouldnt be a weakness on a protege either, especially with the reduced power output.

My SHO broke transmissions about once every 2 months.

they'll hold together fine as long as you don't make any significant amount of power (sub-300hp)

wow thats incredible, i always heard the axles snapped like toothpicks but the trannies were 1/2 decent :(

i lost 2 differentials and 4th and 5th gear. Those open diffs can't handle any kind of power.

if you are talking about SHO tranny's shouldn't this be relocated in the 3rd gen section.

also the only tranny that bolts to a first gen is the "G" and "F" series trannys out of protege's or ford escort GT's with the 1.8L engine.

Roddimus Prime July-6th-2004 08:15 AM

"I" was talking about the SHO tranny.....the thread starter was asking about tranny swaps....this is the only one I knew about.

macdaddyslomo July-6th-2004 08:52 AM

btw....1st gen probe GT's got an H series, not f or g....stronger than both...just had to point that out

Roddimus Prime July-6th-2004 09:00 AM

Yeah, the probe is a funny story. It was originaly going to be the 82-up mustang body but ford had a hard time fitting even a small V8 under it's hood so they went with a mazda designed vehicle and made it FWD instead....not only was this cheaper and sold more units....the 2.2L turbo versions were every bit as fast as their mustang counter-parts. I know....I got beat at many a stop light by one!

macdaddyslomo July-6th-2004 09:51 AM

yup..I beat stock v8 stangs in my MX-6, until you get to the 99+ Gt's or Cobra's.....or the rare SVO's...Matty knows about those too!!

Roddimus Prime July-6th-2004 01:31 PM

SVO pWn3z jo0!!!

Protoss July-6th-2004 02:36 PM

guys lets stay on topic, please. i mean this is all good info but it is not helping the first gen cause

macdaddyslomo July-6th-2004 02:48 PM

whoops sorry for the threadjack,:D qustion had already been answered tho:rolleyes:
