Dark Trunk!

Since my car was brand new, there has never been a light bulb in the trunk, but there has always been a socket mounted to the roof of it with 2 wires going to the socket. I went to Pep Boys and asked one of the employees to identify the socket, and he did (can't remember what he said, lol). So I bought a little package with two bulbs in it, and it was a perfect fit...seemed to go right in. Only problem: no light. I tried the other bulb in the package. Once again, no light. (keep in mind i'm not an expert on electronics) So I borrow my friend's voltmeter/multimeter. (I think they're the same...) Sure enough...there's definitely electricity coming through one of the wires...which I am assuming is the positive wire. Any suggestions/ideas as to why my trunk light doesn't work?

if you have 12v + on one wire, then your missing a ground. on the passenger side deep, near the strut tower, there's a bracket for a factory pinswitch that the arm of the trunk hits. It sends ground to turn on the light.

wow, i thought my trunk light shorted or somthing, mine is exactly the same, never had a light so i bought one and it didnt work, the one wire is hot and the other nothing, i though about grounding the one side of the bulb but then since there is no switch, it would just stay on all the time, if you figure it out do tell what you did!

killacotton April-6th-2002 09:45 PM

ohh.. that missing switch explains it, mazdaspeedwest is there any way i could get you to take a picture of the switch? you dont have to take it out just what the veiwable part looks like, thanks

here's a wiring diagram i had for use in adding an aftermarket pin switch, but the factory one is the least hassle, any dealer will have it. I'll try to snap some pics. Now this is a bit overkill, as the ground from the pin switch directly will work too, but i like wiring projects...:D

PlutoPeopz April-9th-2002 12:03 PM

Thx

Thanks Darryl. I have a strong dislike for wiring projects ever since the sidemarkers, but I appreciate the diagram anyways, lol. But please post pictures, so I can know whether or not I already have it, cuz there is this little black thing on the strut tower...just no wire going to it. (could be it...never know) Otherwise, I plan on fixing my trunk light this week. It's annoying not having one.

BTW, The neon blue trunk light that I have was a freebie that the guy who did my system put in as a little extra for me...and it only turns on when the stereo is on (couldnt complain, it was free) but I do want a light for when I open the trunk.

I feel like the little bulb that fits in that stock fixture would probably not be adequate for me...I'm thinking like bright as the sun in there, hehe. I'm really just looking for a bright white light, maybe even fluorescent, but nothing ricy. Any suggestions from anyone for a replacement fixture that is really bright?

Not Cool, Killacotton

I don't really appreciate the subject of your post being "gaaaaay". You asked why my car is purple. Well, it's not, it's stock light blue. It was photoshopped by a member of this forum, protetype. Just a joke...I dont think any idiot is gonna go out and get their Protege painted bright Barney purple.

Do some reading:

Good idea Wil...i'm gonna call a few junkyards.

BTW, I'm not that friggin DUMB to think that the rubber boot for the strut could be the trunk light switch, LOL. :asshole: It is a little black piece of metal that is off to the side of the rubber boot, which, as far as I can tell, serves no purpose whatsoever in my car.

Good luck on ure test

c ya
:D

dood, u can get a light put in there. jus goto a salvage yard and gank a Trunk light outta a LX. My DX has a trunk light!!! WOOT

mazdaspeedwest April-9th-2002 10:24 PM

the black thing you mentioned, is probably the tab that holds the boot on there. Like i said, the trunk lid arm must hit it, sooooo follow the arm as it closes (if you have too, get in the trunk with a flashlight) there is a small bracket on the passengers side (it's the same color as the car) with a hole in it. Thats where the pin switch goes.
