cv joints
 

i was wondering if anyone else has major problems with the cv joints (loud knocking sound while turning). i got mine fixed (replaced) and a week later the same symptoms were there. maybe houston just has shitty roads. any help would be appreciated.:dunno:

did they replace just one joint or the whole axle shaft? did they do both sides? if they didnt you could just have another one going bad. :D

they replaced both. does anyone else experience this problem

there are 2 per axle, inner and an outter. 4 in total, maybe one of those is bad.

did they use the cheap ass slip over with a glued edge and hose clamps? if so, maybe it blew. they don't last as long as the solid type, but more labor is involved too.

thanks, i had no clue the the cv joints were that complicated, or maybe i just didnt want to admit that. does anyone know of solid/reliable joints that i should consider putting in?

I have the same problem with my car....

My CV boot was ripped on the right side.........I changed the inner and outer ones, but that did not seem to help......

I had it ripped for a few months and maybe rain and all that garbage did some other damage............I have to go and get it checked out, because it pisses me off............whenever I turn it goes..........click click click...........damn.......

yeah my left out side one has got a rip in it. :rant:

Hi guys. I'm new to the forum, but saw this topic, so I thought I would make this my first post.

I had trouble with my CV joints about a year and a half ago. I did some checking and found out, like others have said, that I could put on boots over new joints that have a slot in them so to speak. Like a sleeve that wraps around it. It never fully closes though and dirt can easily get in the joint and cause damage. So I chose to replace both front axles. It was really no problem at all, and we had it done in three nights easy.

So I would suggest just replacing the full axles. I don't remember the cost, i will have to check on that one. But it was really no trouble. Hardest part was getting the old ones out. But yeah, that clicking noise is a pain.

buying the axle is cheaper normaly then buying the joint. I came across this with my sandance. also welcome protegepower94 :bt:

Get a Hayne's manual and some axle grease and do them yourself. I've done them and they're easy.

Autozone has driver side complete axles for $65 + $45 core not sure how much the half shaft and passenger side axle is, but in the same ballpark...pretty cheap if you ask me. Much easier to replace the whole thing, that mess with the boots. Plus Autozone offers a lifetime warranty...

may want to look over your tie rods and ball joints too.....

It might also be the tie rods or the tie rod ends. I had that problem wth my old dodge spirit, i thought it was the cv joints and got them replaced only to find out it was going to cost $300 to fix the real problem, tie rod ends. but the cv joints needed changed anyway, so what the hell

My joints are a little dry, but not damaged yet. My mechanic said I should change them soon and that it would cost me 150$CAN for the whole front axle and it's lifetime garanteed... No details on that, but it seems like a pretty good deal to me!
