i use a 20w50 full synthetic valvoline. the car sux on gas mileage now but it keeps my lifters quiet as can be. im only gettin like 24 miles to the gallon, thats a mix of city and highway driving.

Loginology October-7th-2002 10:35 PM

Really? When I switched to 20w50 I noticed and INCREASE in MPG.

Placebo affect?

Funky Buddha October-7th-2002 10:37 PM

I use 10w50(?) from quaker state

mazdaspeedwest October-7th-2002 10:46 PM

i used to use Penzoil, but switched last year to Valvoline DuraBlend 10w30

zenilder October-7th-2002 10:55 PM

I used Valvoline's VR1 Racing oil with throwing in a bottle of Valvoline's oil additive when I could feel the engine had less power (and it helped quite a bit). I did an engine flush a while back and I've only been using Mobil 1 Synthetic (10w30).

Once I have my spare DOHC longblock built up mildly, I think I'll try using Redline 10w30 oil. We'll see.

Identity_X October-7th-2002 11:02 PM

Valvoline 10W30.........

protejay October-7th-2002 11:09 PM

tried Redline 10W30 (and a new additive called MotorSilk) for the 1st time before i came back from the east coast...and since then i haven't had to add oil like i used to.
changing the valve cover gasket properly and replacing the rear crank seal 3 months ago also has helped reduce the leaks.
before i was basically using Mobil1 10W30.

Before the keyway failure on my original engine, I had 180k miles with no oil consumption, using mostly Valvoline 10W30 Synthetic (because that was one that would fit in the valve cover without a funnel).

David, you are a funny guy, dude a small funnel is like 99 cents :D
but i agree, the Valvoline bottles fit nicely...

I use Valvoline 10w30. My Father use to run oil tests for the Air Force on the jets when they would return from a mission...one day when it was slow in the shop they went to the BX and bought all the top name brand oils and ran tests on them. WIth out a doubt the Pennzoil contained the most 'trash' and impurities in the oil and it didn't hold it's viscosity as long as the others. The Valvoline did the best and second was Castrol...
I am thinking about switching to Valvoline's synth oil or perhaps I may go with Royal Purple.

Oil shootout: You can go here to read about a lab tested oil comparo:

http://bigskyoil.com/oil_vs_oil/oil_vs_oil.html

Pretty interesting findings about some of the big name synths...

Loundarp October-8th-2002 12:19 PM

some people said is not a good idee to change my oil to Synthetic becose my engine have 185000km, 115000 mile. becose the engine will begine to leak. is that true or not? i asked mazda to and they said the sameting.

i have a BP1.8 and right now i use ford filter and ford oil 5W30

kagekun October-8th-2002 01:10 PM

i have 140k on my 1.8dx and i use syn oil. Maybe its the extra 5 bucks i paid for it but it seems a lot smoother then the regular stuff. Thanks for that oil shootout, i had never really thought about researching things like that.
