Clicking Tranny in reverse

Well...My 92 protege SE 1.8L SOHC has had one owner before me and now has 230K. When i am backing up, I am hearing a clicking noise from the tranny...now i have heard that the Trannies in the proteges are based upon the b series truck tranny...but i really don't know....so it may be that it's just acting like any truck tranny would ...but i wanna know if i should think about getting a tranny put in it the spring.....out of a protege or another compatible tranny....i really don't know if it is worth it or not....
If anyone can give me an idea of what it may be.....or if you have had similar problems...let me know....i wanna do some intake mods and tune it in the summer....but if the tranny is pooched that comes first....

anyways....appreciate any input....

thanx

...yeha that makes sense....rwd...fwd....i didn't think about it...
anyways...its stick.....5 spd... and when i back up straight....the clicking sound occurs....nothing in any other gears
....could that still be the tranny?

...how do i check to see if it's the cv joint?
i replaced the front left drive axel about two monthes ago b/c of the c/v joint clicking (the boot was torn and i didn't see it..) and it was a completly different sound....and only when i turned sharply....so i don't know if that is the case...

if it is the tranny.....what other transmitions are compatible with the progetge 1st gen?
