Changing exhaust pipe ...
My 92 SE has that nice straight pipe sound, real nice in the high revs, with backfire on throttle lift...
And it cost me nothing ! But now, I want to fix it. The pipe is broken just before the muffler. How hard/complicated is it ? What tools do I need ? Thanks ! |
First, let it be known that I am an idiot. Any answers I give should be taken with a huge grain of salt. That being said, It shouldn't be that hard.
I recently (Last Week) replaced my own Catalytic Converter. All that was involved was removing one set of bolts at the front of the cat and one at the back and taking it off the hangers, then installing the new one with the hangers and some new bolts. I did have to go and have the bolts cut off, they were 10 years old. But, other than that, it was a breeze. This was the cat and not the pipe, but I would guess that it would be similar. Now, I'm not familiar with the SE, but I have a '94 LX and that's where my experience draws from. I needed a 14mm ratchet and wrench. I also used copious amounts of Liquid Wrench, to no avail. |
Thanks, idiot ! Oh, I mean txdave13...
I'll have a look see this weekend to check out the bolts. If I have trouble with some bolts, what can be done (besides heat...) ? Liquid wrench ? |
You will most likely need a welder to weld some new piping in. It sounds like the pipe the muffler is connected to is rusted out. This can't be fixed with WD-40 and some bolts. I would just take it to a MIDAS or similar exhaust shop and have them weld on a new pipe section and muffler there...should be less than $50 and wouldn't take all day like you doing it yourself.

just buy a stright section, and 2 clamps and DIY... easy fix.. midas will want to replace the entire thing

That's exactly what I want to avoid.
My muffler seems fine (visually), I'm not changing it. Why would I need welding ? Isn't the muffler connected to that pipe using bolts ? |
