whats a good brake upgrade for the 1st gen? is there any other cars that the brake assembly fits on to my car front and rear? if so how much bigger are they. how about rx-7 rotors and calipers? any info plz

Check the FAQ, there is a list of brake pad upgrades for the first gen.
I'm not sure if the RX-7 calipers themselves would fit with the stock
Protege rotors, not likely I would say.
If you wanted to upgrade to them, you would need new hubs and shit. I really don't know all that you would need, but it would be much more than just buying rotors, pads and calipers.
Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:

Rotors
Calipers
Pads
Hubs
Master cylinder
Probably the proportioning valve

thanks forn the input. i just thought that maybe the mx6 or probe had bigger disks. and thought that there might be a way to install them

Now that you mention it, they also have 5 lug hubs like the RX7, but since they're FWD, it would be much easier to swap them in, of course, you would still need the parts I mentioned above, plus maybe the parking brake cales, which I forgot to mention earlier. Also new rims since you don't have 5 lugs.
I doubt I covered everything you need but that should give you an idea of what you need. You could probaly find most everything you need at a local boneyard, it would be an interesting project for you to do.

I think the stock brakes are great. First

bleed the brakes, fill with good fluid
get good tires
install stainless steel brakelines

before you come to the conclusion that the brakes are inadequate.

Sure they're great... If you don't mind that horrible screeching noise that people have been reporting.

yea i might just stick with the stock brakes. but upgrade to slotted rotors and steel brakelines.

that squealing went away after i put the goop on the back of the brakes.


i just waited for 2 days for the clip that goes from the top pin to the bottom one.(took a corner hard and the pin shot out and f'd the inside of the rim up) the guy who owned the car before me said he just got the front brakes done before i bought it. either he f'd up and forgot to put that clip in or it was just old. mazda told me that if i bought the new front brakes from them that it comes with all the hardware, but i wasnt about to dish out 70 bucks for new brakes when mine still have 50% life left so i had to wait 2 days for a $8 clip.

OK, get some good pads too, and apply the anti-squeal compound :cool:

edit: Moose, by the way, are you looking for suggestions for autocrossing/racing or just the street?

dude, the brakes are awesome...have saved my life many a time :(

i was hoping to auto cross one day buit it is going to be a while before that happens. im going to start setting it up now then when i can afford it buy another car for point a to b and strip my protege for racing.

Yeah. Check out my page and see the brakes section. Yup those are RX-7 calipers on a 1st gen. They were painstakingly done by modifying the hub by a machinist.
Rotors are from a Honda Odessey and custom-drilled 4x100pcd.

For you guys, better ask Wilwood if they have a kit the for 1st gen. They have it for the 3rd gen.
