Body style

Is it possible to change the front of the 1st gen protege to the front of a 88-89 323? I really dont like the squar head lights but I like the rest of it and the back.

Are there any body kits for it? And does the BPT engine that corksport is selling be good for an upgrade?

The 1994 protege is rar is costs a lot of $$. I would rather just change the front of a 90-93 protege. Does anyone know if the BPT is a a drop in and also is changing the hood, head lights, and grille be enough?

You can get the lights and the grille from a 323, but the hood is going to have to come from a 94 Protege. The top of the hood, where it meets the drainage at the base of the windshield is flat on the 323 and curved on the Pro. If you like, you can switch the fenders too, I think, but then the flat part on the hood looks worse IMO. I guess it's all about taste, but I was considering the idea of changing to the curved lights, but once you get an aftermarket bodykit, the square lights actually look more agressive!

Also, the BPT is made for the 90-94 323, that includes the Familia, so it fits perfectly. In the case of the GTX BPT (easy to come by), it's the same DOHC engine found in the 1st gen Pro, the BP, only it's turbocharged:bt: , hence the T. In the case of the GTR BPT (good luck finding one in less than a year), it's got lower compression pistons and a bigger turbo, but it's the same basic engine from what I've been told from Corksport. The GTX BPT has about 180hp and the GTR BPT has about 210hp.

Hope that helps.

yea so your saying the GTX BPT engine is better? The thing I dont get is what is the diff of the GTX BPT and the reg. BPT. If its only turbo diff, then thats no prob cuz I plan on getting bigger turbo anyways. Also would I have to change tranny and other stuff to get the BPT in there if the car came with a 1.8L DOHC engine?

Thanx,

No, the GTR engine is better than the GTX engine. The GTX is more or less a turbo-ed Protege LX motor. The BP in the '90-'94 Protege LX even has the piston oil squirters and turbo oil returns in the block.

The GTR engine is much different. The block is ribbed for your boosting pleasure (sorry), meaning that it can tolerate more boost due to having a stronger block. The pistons are also lower compression ratio, and the turbo is larger.

So, the BP is 125 hp, the GTX is 180 hp, and the GTR is 210-225 hp. The turbo motors also make lots of torque.

Several people have tweaked their GTX motors to produce substantially more HP, and the torque is insane. (205 hp and 260 ftlb, at the wheels).

The regular transmission from the LX should be good for about 300 hp if treated well. The stock clutch will last as long as you don't intend to race it, in which case the aftermarket should be your friend.

Sounds like a great and somewhat essy project for me in the summer.
:blue:

I'll have to change ECU I know that. Are there any more electrical things I will need to do, like wiring?

Can you name some good engine tweaks for the BPT of the GTX, because the GTR one is like 2x more expensive and I'm not bill gates.

Also, do you guys know if the 93 protege LX has altezza euro tail lights for it?

So what year of a 323 will I need to get the head lights from to fit the 93 protege? Are there any clear corners availible for it either?
