no BPT engine in the states.
90-91 protege had an AWD trim model with the 1.8SOHC.
I believe the 88-89 323 Hatchback had an AWD model with the B6T. (1.6 turbo)

check the FAQ

bet

bet you get great gas mileage with the 4wd!

I've owned a '90 Protege 4WD now for a while and have loved it living in Alaska. They do exist; get about 25-30 miles to the gallon, or at least that was what I was getting when I took it on a 4500 mile trip.
However, Mazda only made the 4WD version for 1990 and 1991, as I recall. After that it was discontinued due to lack of interest in the car. Again, it was a 103hp 1.8L SOHC engine with fuel injection. In 4WD mode, it switches between the front and rear differentials (thus always having at least 2 tires moving) and in 4x4 mode, the center differential clicks in to give all 4 tires power to the car. More than once, this has gotten me out of difficult mud or snow spots. I don't know why you'd want a picture of one as it looks just like any other 1st gen Protege, except that instead of "DX" on the side (or whatever), it shows "4WD" and has the the center differential switch inside next to the steering column.
If you want information, the FAQ is located at:
http://web2.airmail.net/emann/protegefaq/
you can choose between all the options to see engine specs, model, etc.

I do have a question though. Did the AWDs come with power accessories and stuff like that? (Door locks, moonroof). I'm just curious how the options were laid out for the AWD trim line... :)

CHeck out www.cardomain.com they have a bunch of sweet 323's, not to mention the turbo 4wd ones too ;)

i know my 4WD pro is dirt stock, no power opts anywhere....thats all i know

sirfei April-10th-2003 09:14 PM

No, the Protege 4WD's did not come with power options at all. Manual locks, windows, seats, etc. And no sun roofs to my knowledge. I believe those options only came with the LX version, I believe (I might have that mixed up with the DX, but not positive.) The 4WD was just special as it had the 4WD system and then the 4x4 control. You, of course, had the option between 5-spd and automatic. I own the 5-spd myself (I don't drive auto's, personal preference.)
