Hey, I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to know this but where do you guys learn all of this stuff about engines and auto tech? Is there some site online where I can just learn the basics (parts of a car, how the engines work/parts of an engine) because I'm tired of seeing all these people talking about modding their engine this way and that way and having no idea what the hell they're talking about. I can't take the auto class here because its 6 hours a day and I don't have that kind of time to balance with school and other classes. Plus I don't even drive yet so I can't like work on my car and test things out and whatnot. I just think its about time I learned some stuff about cars, I hope somebody can help me get started. Thanks.

I always found spending the day walking the local salvage yards a good learning experience. Lots of open internals to look at and play with.

just browse the internet for car stuff and eventually you'll start learning.....whenever you don't know what a word stnads for ask the people here or do a quick search on the net......

and on top of all that...I would be willing to bet that both at your school and in the town in which you live there is a building with the words LIBRARY on the outside....inside there are books....LOTS of reference books, including repair manuals.....go and get a repair manual for the model of your choice and start reading? read the section on engine overhaul....get other pictures of engine parts so you can associate the names of the parts/pieces with the pictures....and read read read......do you have access to basic hand tools? go to a junk yard and by a complete junked engine.....and start taking it apart little by little....study it....who knows....you may even be able to clean it up....put it back together...and make it run.....

beleive it or not...its how most of us got our start...just slowly tinkering with stuff.....its the best teacher. :D

I'll start reading at howstuffworks.com. I don't have access to a junk yard and just tinkering with stuff that I don't what the hell it is won't really get me anywhere. I'll just look for some stuff online and I'll get some car books from teh library.

the thing to do is to do SOME tinkering ALONG with the reading...apply what you read/learn.....its a proven fact that MOST people, at least those that are mechanically inclined, learn faster and better by DOING...practicle application.

I obtained most of my knowledge form my Father (huge car nut, runs in the family), then bits and pieces from this club, my friends, and reading my manual when working/repairing my car.
