Adding an RPM dial gauge

Alright, so my 4WD Pro doesn't come with a TACH at all, probably like most Pro's, but I've seen them in the LX's at least for the same year model ('90). Would it be possible to swap out my current gauge cluster and put in an LX's Gauge cluster that has the tach, or should I look into just adding an aftermarket tach to my car? If so, how do I do that? (not greatly mechanically inclined here, sorry).

its well known that its been done before.

an Lx cluster would be alot easier than an aftermarket tach.....

just get ya a Lx cluster. easiest way to do it. People do it all the time

i installed a tach. its not hard. you just gotta connect it to your ignition coil and that is the part. you gotta find out which wire has a charge. thats the part of it. just ask me for a write up if you buy one.

I put a LX cluster in my 323. I was going to just get an aftermarket tach, but I like the super-clean look of the factory cluster. There's a pic of it somewhere in here:

There might be one problem with putting in an LX cluster in a 4WD pro. IIRC there is an extra indicator for the 4wd system. Does that mean there are extra connectors?

I'd like to have the smoother look of just putting in the LX, but you bring up a good point about the 4WD indicator... I'm gonna have to take a look and see if there's a place on teh LX cluster that I can put that into, but so far, I don't think I see one.. I may just go for an aftermarket tach. I'll go check my car later on tonight and see what I find for the light... If anything, I might be able to move it to another location. Thanks all!

Yea, so there is a light on the 4WD cluster that's for the 4WD system. It's in the far left corner and it flashes "CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK" or something like that when it's locking, and then stays solid when it is locked. It's in the same place on the LX cluster where the fuel gauge is. Now, there is a strip of like lights between the fuel gauge and the speedometer that house like the fuel, washer, and another light. I haven't taken out my cluster to see how the center differential light is connected, but it may be possible to rewire some of that stuff. If that's the case, I can do that (I have the tools and know electrical whatnot.) I'm currently looking at a '94 LX gauge cluster on eBay. Does anyone think there might be a problem with that cluster if I were to bid on it and put it into my 4WD Pro?

Okay, here's a dead thread I worked on a bit ago, and I'm reviving it. I've looked into putting an LX's gauge cluster into my 4WD. I found some info on the PROTEGE FAQ; it says I can do the swap, but will need additional pieces:

BA3T-55-445 warning lights panel
BA1E-55-444 warning lights panel
B529-55-443 4WD warning light circuit board

Does anyone know if I can just take these out of my old cluster and put them into the LX's cluster? And if so, how exactly would this work? I haven't looked myself, exactly, so it may be easy, but thought some of you that have removed the cluster may know more about this before I dig in. Thanks, all!

.... *crickets chirping*

:)

Unfortunately there aren't too many 4WD folks around here. Info is hard to find. Perhaps a **bump** might help? :)

Yea, I could hear 'em crickets chirping alright... But thanks for the replay, Chastan. I guess I'm gonna have to dig in and find out. I was hoping whoever made that FAQ that I got the info from would know, but I guess not.
I will go search for an LX cluster as close as I can to my miles driven on my cluster and check it out. *shrugs* Who knows, could possibly be easy.

Well, the FAQ is made by TheMAN, who usually posts here quite frequently (though probably reads more carefully in the 3rd gen section), I guess he is on summer vacation or something now.
