'96 Transmisson in '94?

I owned a '96 Protege for a year, and after an accident which left the front end (body-wise) in shambles, I am not going to repair it. Fast forward a couple weeks and the maintenance shop where all my family's vehicles are taken has a '94 Protege for sale for $200 from a dealer in town. He says it runs and looks good (Looks=truth, runs= I'm having him inspect it to make sure, but it seemed fine to me when I turned it on, just needed some gas), but that the reverse has been out in the transmission for a few years now. I have been told that the dealer used this car to pick up cars from other dealers, and that he just parked where he didn't have to back up. So, I thought that instead of rebuilding it, I could just have the transmissions swapped. I just need to know for sure if that is possible considering the redesign in '95.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially quickly (he's inspecting it today). Thanks.

*EDIT*- I forgot to mention that both transmissions are automatic, if that helps any.
