90 protege SOHC turbo?

i called my local performance shop about this. he said any car can have a turbo put on it...its the parts that go along with it that make it tricky. so i need to know if there is a turbo exaust manifolld i can buy that will fit. ive heard of 323 turbo engines, couldnt i steal one off that?

nope...u'll need to get a custom exhaust manifold done for the SOHC. THe GTR exhaust manifold will only fit on the DOHC engines.

swap for a dohc head

ozman88 May-25th-2002 03:32 PM

swapping the head would also be cheaper than buying the entire DOHC engine...while ur at it, u might also want to think about swapping the trans for the G2M-R trans...

oops....

another question...if u swap the DOHC head onto the SOHC motor, do u have to also swap the ECU?

mazdaspeedwest May-26th-2002 05:38 PM

yes, because when you swap the head, you must also swap the intake/exhaust manifolds and the DOHC has VICS on the intake and it's ECU controlled, as with other functions.

Also yes, since your going turbo, if you get either a GTX or GTR intake manifold, there is no VICS and the LX ECU can function without it, but you will need other components to trick the LX ECU to feed more fuel, spark etc.... I have also seen a GTX motor powered with an LX ECU run and function with no other added electronics, but as to it's longevity or consequences, i'd be very careful.

So something like a HKS F-CON fuel management system would work well with the LX ECU in the setup ur talking about?

mazdaspeedwest May-28th-2002 01:38 PM

i'm not familiar with the HKS unit (and their site is down right now) but in order to turbo an N/A engine, you'll need a few parts...rising rate fuel pressure regulator, high flow feul pump, boost control, etc...

Wil (gro harlem) has a page on his site with all the parts needed.

question?

sorry guys dont mean to just jump in on this post or anything, but i just had a quick question. When you swap tha SOHC for the DOHC(just the head) you still keep the lower compression right??? Thats why you guys even recommended this right.
thanks and sorry again.

how much would this cost

im willing to put 600$

into my engine to make it alot alot faster....

while there has been no feedback or first hand info on this swap (that i know of) the info is strickly theory, but yes keeping the lower compression SOHC block is the understanding for turbo applications.

sorry to say, but $600 will not make your SOHC "alot alot" faster, but rather a partial "alot".

a bit more and you've got the complete GTX turbo engine, which WILL make it "alot alot" faster, but you'll still need to trick the ECU or go with a GTX ECU or stand alone ECU for maximum benefits and reliablity.

were talking more like $1500-2500
- motor
- ECU
- G5M-R or G25M-R LX tranny
- high flow fuel pump
- intercooler + piping
- guages (boost, EGT, A/F...)
- turbo downpipe
- exhaust system
- importing fees/shipping charges
- labor
