*HELP*Is my car fast or.....

i have a quick ?? about my RPM reading....

i have a 91 323 protoge however the engine has a big KIA in the middle of it...

heres the lowdown:

-1st gear i can get up to 10mph while my RPM reads 3000

-2nd- about 22MPH and the rpm is 3000

-3rd, 40 mph and 3000 RPM

-4th, 50 MPH and 3000RPM

-5th, about 68MPH give or take and 3000RPM...and i usually shift on 3000 RPMs

im not sure if all this is good or bad because when i get to 3000RPM it feels like i should shift gears?????

can some tell me

so will i damage it if i shift at 5000RPM(the redline is 700 or 75) cause it really sounds the engine might blow or something...

slayer4u February-21st-2005 11:03 AM

It won't kill it bu I usually shift a 4000

kargoboy February-21st-2005 11:27 AM

If the engine has been well cared for, I'd be shifting at 5500-6000. You might need a clutch sooner than later, but it won't hurt the engine. You will get the most power out of your engine if you shift above 4000.

Dude, shift at redline. It's what the Mazda engineers put a redline there for. They built the engine and with much testing and evaluation decided that the highest reliable RPM the BP-ZE should see is 7300RPM, which is where they put the rev limiter. If your engine says Kia, then it's a BP-DE, with 122hp(Mazda made engines for Kia). I'm not sure if they lowered the redline, but whatever it is, that's where you want to shift if you want to drive fast. Trust me, the engine can handle it. My car goes 60kph in 1st, 100kph in 2nd, 130kph in 3rd, 180kph in 4th, and the fastest I've gone in 5th is 210kph, but who knows how well the speedo is calibrated.

nice....thnx for the feedback...

and i was also wondering..if i put in a new intake and or headers....do i need to get other part to "maximize" the intake and headers performance...

Gen1GT February-26th-2005 07:52 PM

A header and full exhaust is a good start for more power. There aren't any good intakes for our car, but and RX7AFM and a pod filter will add a few hp. Advancing your ignition timing is a great and free way to more power.....

nice...thanks

There is an excellent intake, the PRM Pro Intake System. I had one on my SE and it made a huge differance.
