Wheel bearings . . . .

1993.
Protege.

When and at what miles should wheel bearings be replaced? Are they on all 4 wheels? What are the symptoms or sounds that tell you that wheel bearings need replacing? I am not doing this myself. What is a reasonable price for this at dealer/garage?
My husband is of no help.

Re: Wheel bearings....

All 4 wheels have wheel bearings. There is no set mileage as to when they should be replaced. Replacement is only required if a bearing wears out or runs dry of lubricant. If a bearing goes bad you'll hear a noise while driving or turning from the specific wheel involved. You can confirm a bad bearing by jacking up the car, putting it on jackstands, grasping the road wheel and trying to move it. If you can feel movement (play) in the noisy wheel, you probably have a bad wheel bearing that should be replaced.

I can't help you out on the cost of replacement as I have no idea myself.

I have had to have a wheel bearing replaced three times in my life. I only replaced the first one myself. I can tell you that a tell-tale sign is a rumbling sound or rough hum from the wheel that has a bad bearing. It almost sounds as if you were driving on a bad road but you know it's not a bad road because you're on a good road and the car is not bumping up and down. You can usually, but not always, stop the loud hum by turning your steering wheel in one of the left or right directions. Only steering to one side will stop or lower the hum. The center or the other direction will only increase the hum. That's the way it happened in the last two of the three times. Hope this helps. By the way, each of the three times was on three differrent cars and only the last time was on the Protege.
