older Mazdas that have the same rear brake calipers that the 92 Protege has
 

Does any one know if there are any other older Mazdas that have the same rear brake calipers that the 92 Protege has.

I have found one of my calipers has frozen on the fixed shaft that it should float on. I need to get a new cailiper and a new mounting bracket. I can't even get the two apart.

The bracket is probably a dealer item, you know the Mazda dealer or the Pick n Pull. But frankly, I haven't seen too many Proteges in Pick n Pulls yet, but I have seen GLCs and older Mazdas.

Any ideas? Please, no wild guesses. If you're sure, I'd appreciate your input.

The MX-3 uses the same calipers.

I don't know where you live, but it sounds like you're english or something by the way you say "pick n pull." I think you're talking about a junkyard or something, right???

Overseas the MX-3 is called the Eunos Presso or Autozam AZ-3, or the Mazda MX-3. Any of those three names should find it.

I'm not too sure about other cars. I know the Escort uses the same fronts, but I don't know about the rear.

There are 2 kinds of junkyards. The kind where you go to the desk and you ask for something, and they get it for you, or the "you pick you pull," go back there by yourself and take the parts up to the cashier. So far I've found a grand total of zero proteges in a few visits I've made to the u pick u pull places, but today I found a pretty nice monster audio cable still hidden inside a ford escort....$3...:)

Exactly Chastan! When I had an 84 Civic, they were all over the place, but I would never find any Proteges in the Pick n pulls (aka Self serve automotive recycling, dismantling, amd pre-owned parts boutique).

Honestly, this car is 11 years old now. I'm really surprised that they're aren't more of them in the yards, but then I guess it is a Protege and not a Civic ;)

LOL! I just went to the pick n pull in North San Jose, didn't find a single protege! D'oh! (So many beautiful Rx-7s, though! Such a shame to see them in that state. Even a turbo II). I'm gonna try the one in Fairfield today, it's a lot closer.

I did find a mercury tracer with BP engine, x77,000 miles (5 digit odometer, guess ford didn't think they could build a car that could have that high of miles :p), which I didn't really feel like getting, though if they gave it to me for $100 wouldn't be too bad, and a Monster Audio RCA cable which they gave me for $3. You know, I should have pulled the computer out of the tracer and sold it on ebay. lol

The problem that I have is that the caliper which should float on the two shats or studs is frozen onto the static shaft, that is the shaft that you don't unscrew in order to replace your back disk brakes.

I was able to pull the bracket which that static shaft screws into and the caliper still on it and hack saw that shaft in two. I put the accordion baffle back on the caliper where that shaft goes in and used a pipe wrench to get the remaining portion of the static shaft out of the bracket

With the accordion baffle in place, the guy at Kragen didn't notice. I wouldn't have considered that a rebuildable core. And the core charge was $75! The rebuilt caliper was $80!!

And if that's not bad enough, that simple shaft that screws into the bracket was a special order from the dealer for $95!!

Next time, I'll take the time to check the Pick 'n' Pulls. Hell, maybe I'll fly to England to check out the ones there. Cheerio!

the calipers on our cars are the goofiest fuckin thing in the world, while for a first gen pro, there are 2 different rotor sizes for the front wheels, 9 some inches for the sohc, and 10 some inches for the dohc engines, however, i have seen 3 different part listings for front calipers for a 90-94 mazda protege, 1 for the sohc, and 2 for the dohc. anybody know what i'm talking about? on my front calipers, i had the wrong fuckin part, 1322v... the remanufactured model stamp on the outside of the caliper. and then there was 1422v listed for the front calipers for the dohc as well, which turned out to be the set i needed. be careful with this shit, confused me, and stilll does... eitherwise, you're going to pay dearly for the confusion.

Just so I dont' mislead anyone...

I mentioned that that single pin that the caliper floats on was $95. It turned out that the pin and cast iron bracket came as a unit. That might have justified a higher price, but still...

I went through that same confusion a couple months ago! There is a 13 or 14 cast into the front dohc calipers. My 91 GT had the 14 so.... the 13 must not have been used for long....

Are you talking about for the rear caliper? Dealer told me $95.18 canadian for that cast bracket with the stationary slider. I bent mine taking it apart fromt he caliper since it was so seized.... I used a hammer to straighten it out :D

Yeah, it was the right-rear. It was $105 out the door at Bill Lang Mazda. Mine had the caliper frozen to that stationary slider.

Ouch. Thats a lot more money than I would have paid! $95 canadian is about $69 US. Every year I pull that part off the caliper and grease it up. The next year its always a bitch to take apart...

Yeah and another $70 for the caliper. The caliper wasn't even leaking, but I suspect that the ebrake mechanism was busted considering that the wheel could still turn with the ebrake engaged. I figured that this was due to the caliper not being able to float. I didn't really investigate whether the ebrake wouldn't work because the caliper wasn't floating, or the ebrake was broken on that caliper for the same reason, because it became very apparent that I couldn'r reuse that caliper in either case.
