Going to buy new struts..need help

I am gonna have to replace the 2 front struts on my 91dx. I probably won't goto mazda for the stock parts(waaaay expensive and no junkyard around) but probably order a pair from other popular manufacturers (Monroe). Is there a diff. in buying a 91dx strut as opposed to aftermarket manufacturers? What should I look for other than fit? What about the type of oil they use? What about compression, preload and rebound settings, if there are any? Will they offer the basic ride feel of the mazda struts?

Thanks

Try searching the forum for "struts". Monroes are cheap but lofty for any performance use.

Probably the best stock replacement struts, from a ride quality standpoint, are the KYB GR-2s, at about $55/per. The Monroe Sensatracs are horrible, being mushy in the middle and STIFF at the ends of their travel (or maybe, that was just the bumpstops :) ).

From a performance bang-for-the-buck, the ZX-2 SR struts are the way to go, although they aren't a direct bolt it (requiring just a little work). They are firmer than stock, but will work well with just about any spring.
