Simple upgrades? cone filter and filter adapter.. the k&n drop in filter would work for the protege, but you'd get a better yield eliminating the stock air box. as far as the resonator in the intake.. it's not just a waste of space... removing it is without logic. search on this, you'll find out why. full exhaust system (car could be done in less than a day) .. ie full mandrel bent 2 inch or 2 1/4 inch piping, high flow cat, custom flex pipe and you can also pick up a pacesetter header while you're at it (can be found other places BESIDES corksport). there is currently a group buy posted here on the club for genie headers.. these are more recommended but are hard to come by.. might want to take advantage of that soon. only reason i encourage you NOT to go to corksport is their prices are a little higher than what you should be paying, they take a while to source parts..don't get me wrong, good company, but you can find PLENTY of other online dealers for protege parts. aside from that, if you're not doing the work yourself, cam shafts are going to run you 500 or more if you can't source regrinds..(which mike323 does for 250 for a set). then installation, new gasket, and if you decide to, cam gears, and it is recommended you dyno tune them a bit to squeeze all the power you can out of them. cam shafts with install could run as little as 500 to 600, as much as a grand (1000) depending on what shafts you're getting. as far as 'bolt on' performance, theres basic exhaust, intake, and cam shafts.. anything else performance wise, you're talking about gutting the engine practically. hope this helps
