What engine swap for BG Sedan.

Hey, I'm new to the forum (FOB from mazda323performance.com)
anyway I've got a 1989 (new shape) Mazda 323 Sedan.
the car is full-time 4WD, has all-round discs. from the chasis code E-BG6R does anyone know what my options are for dropping a new engine into this thing?

I'm not sure if the engine is a B6 or BP style... but its definately a BG chasis.
So basically which would be the easier swap? and which transmission would I need to put in to go with it? (considering the car is already 4WD) ?

Cheers guys, thanks for your help.

by the way mods i've done so far are is sounds (2x12's, total power is 420watts RMS), exhaust (2.25" striaght-thru RPS exhaust), suspension (KYB GAS all-round) and I've replaced the front seats with those out of an MX-3. new paintjob is coming soon!!!

Okay... was there a Sedan version of the GTX? or was it hatch only?

what is the current engine in my car? is it B6 or BP?

is the AWD gearbox in the GTX the same as the fulltime 4WD box in mine? (it has a lockable differential, etc)

dude!

where do you live?
i'd have thought you'd be surrounded by those damn gtx hatches ;)

your bg6r is a 1600(b6-m). the transmission i have no real clue about but being the 1600, it may be the same transmission that comes in the bfmr?
i don't know anything about trannys but i'd guess it won't bolt up to a 1.8. jesse will probably know?!!?

i agree that a gtx engine would be your best bet - there is plenty of room in there for it and probably very little fckng around afterwards if you get a decent mechanic to do the job. if you're in or around christchurch, i can tell you the best guy......

the other option is to source the B6T from the bf series which will probably allow you to keep your transmission parts but again, i'll have to defer to someone who knows more about such things. :D

Hey. I'm in Wellington, NZ... not chch... but if its an engine transplant and I can only get it done in chch... well i guess i'd make the mission :D cud get some sno'boardin' in at the same time too.. :D

So you say the engine in my car is a B6-M ?
How is it then, that I can put a BPT engine in to my car?

(although the GTX was BG based when it had the BPT).

Whats more important consideration when swapping engine? The original engine in the car (B6 vs BP) or the body style?

thanks heaps guys!

i didn't mean to insinuate that you could only get it done here. any decent mechanic could do that swap - its just that i know a guy here who does this type of thing for a living - on mazdas that is.

although it helps if you whack in the same engine - if you're going for the bigger gtx, you'll need things like the computer and loom from a gtx as well. there may be a small amount of mucking about with the engine mounts and some other stuff but i don't know for sure .

i would suggest talking to a few performance or parts shops around wellington. ask them who does work on mazdas - they will all know who the likely suspect(s) are. then go talk to them. this is what i did and i guarantee you'll find someone who has done this swap before cos those gtx engines are so cheap. they are the same price as my regular bp 1.8 for goodness sake but like i said, no computer :(
