Transmission replacement question

I joined this group so I can help out my nephew. He has 91 Protégé with a 5 speed. The transmission is failing (keeps popping out of 5th) and he would like me to help him with the swap. I said sure. . . then realized it was a front wheel drive car:eek: which I have never done. So before I get the transmission and have him drive 5 hrs to my home I would like to know what some of you think about the difficulty of the this job. To give an example I can pull and replace a RWD car transmission in ~4 hrs. Is FWD Protégé the same or is it a 12hr job with many words that turn the air blue;) The one advantage I have is I have a work pit in my garage so I have plenty of room to perform the swap.

And haynes does a terible job dewscribing what to do but is good for smal refferences. i have the mazda shop manual so i find the haynes manual illinformed and of several mistakes.

the tranny can be removed 2 ways. one is to pull the whole engine, or in your case drop is out into the work pit. or remove the tranny from the driverside wheel well. Pulling the tranny through the wheel well is a little more difficult than dropping the whole engine/tranny as a unit.

I class a tranny swap to be about as time comsuming as the swapiing and just mounting a new engine. thank god for the lack of wiring on the tranny. There is however the reverse lights. they will be the 2 green wires which i broke when doing the swap i linked you to.

I take it you are mechanically informed, so i wont need to do a step by step.

to pull through the wheel well.

drain nessecery fluids, remove battery/axles ect.

undo all electrical that attaches to the tranny. reverslights, and the main wiring harnees is zipdied to the tranny.

undo the clutch line, at the master cyl. located on the tranny next to the Radiator

break loose but do not remove the tranny bolts on the top 1/2 of the engine

Unstress all the mount with a cerry picker/ engine lift

remove the 3 trannt mounts. the driver most side mount is the easiest to get from the top. i suggest removing it completely. the other 2 mounts i would just unbolt from the crossmember and leave on the tranny.

Remove crossmember

Undo lower tranny bolts. then remove upper

Tranny weight ~150lb
