Tranny Question

Ok, so I was driving around today, in 3rd gear, and I put my hand on the shifter about to shift and the shifter went right into neutral without me pushing the clutch. Anyone know what this is? It also happened when I was in first, it didnt grind or anything, just went into neutral without using the clutch.

My 91 LX used to do that..........until it ended up in the shop for a blown tranny. Turns out the syncros disinergrated and caused the tranny to go. Hopefully your case is different from mine.

If you are at a point where there is no resistence on the motor you can pull it out of gear very easily try doing the same thing while you floor it you should feel resistence pulling it out of gear. If it Pops out of gear very easily then I suggest not shifting into that gear if you can. It could possibly a shift fork going bad.

you should immediately check your tranny fluid level. When you start to get low on fluid, the tranny will begin to pop out of gear and into neutral! Check the axle seals on the tranny to make sure they are not leaking, as well as everywhere else you could have a leak! (If you are going to fill the tranny be carefull when removing the odometer because they tend to break on mazda b series engines and their a P.I.T.A. to replace)

ok, I tired doing the same thing today and nothing happened. yesterday before it fell out, I was racing around pretty hard, and I would let off the gas and it would slide out of gear. But when I am gassing it, it wouldnt move at all. Is it common for mazda trannies to go bad at 107k??

i bought my pro with a bad transmision, and it had about 140,000.

It is your synchromesh gears. It is not you throwout fork or low tranny fluid. Rebuild your tranny or get another one.

there's nothing wrong with it.

damn, there is to many answers I dont know who to believe, I think im just gonna leave it like it is, nothing happened today when I pulled on it in 3rd or 1st, so I think it was a glitch in the matrix or soemthing!

Felix Wankel June-5th-2003 10:01 PM

Almost all the time when I'm slowing down I will take it out of gear with no clutch. When the trans isn't loaded, it will pull right out.

Try this:

Take it to about 3500-4000 rpms at part throttle, let off, and gently pull on the shifter. It should come out of gear and go right into the next one. When it doesn't do that is when you worry about your synchros.

I've had enough clutches die on me to know how to drive without them.

RX7_2ner June-6th-2003 12:09 AM

When that happened, I assumed he had his foot on the gas. That is why I mentioned synchromesh gears. If your foot was off, there is nothing wrong.

Felix Wankel June-6th-2003 06:28 AM

you can pull it out of gear with your foot on the gas if its at the right RPM too. Which I don't think is very high.

Protege91LX June-6th-2003 07:40 AM

yea, my foot was off the gas and it was at like 3700 rpm's. Sweet, now im not worried anymore. Thanks Wankel!
