Tranny problem

Took the Protegé today on the open road for the first time and found out that the tranny isn't working properly. When it shifts out of first gear, it is like it bypasses second and goes into drive.(3). Also, once in drive, it does'nt want to shift into overdrive. I have a haynes manual but it doesn't address this particular problem. Has anyone here had a similar problem before? And if so, what was the resolution for the problem?

edit: Also, the hold light is flashing. Is this some sort of trouble indicator?

Thanks,
DLC

FIXED

I thought I would update you on the tranny problem. It wasn't the transmission after all. There is a module on top of the tranny that slides over the gear linkage shaft that was bad. I replaced that piece on a tip from a local salvage yard guy and it works perfectly now. The hold button stopped flashing also. Thought you might like to know for future troubleshooting.
