I was able to take over a Mazda Protege 1.8L DOHC, but it had been in several races. The previous owner (Nephew) practically destroyed the poor thing. He broke the timing belt while trying to race the Protege. He abandon the car and left it, so I took it over. I had replaced the timing belt, but it seems that the cams are a bit off. I had followed the Chilton's Manual, but the timing marks are not very specific on the car. I was wondering if anyone has experineced this problem. The "I" and "E" marks are on the cams, but they are pretty shifty. There are marks in the housing, but the manual says that the "I" and "E" are slightly off, is this correct?

I found out from another auto forum and I thought that I should share the findings with you all.

On the 1.8L DOHC motor, the cam marks are correct on the tin shroud that has the timing marks. You need to turn the cams to meet the marks...the "I" and "E" both need to be on the cam marks as well as the crank to be in it's respected position. The cams will move and you need to have someone (or a special tool) to hold the cams in place while you put the timing belt on.
