timing belt problem
 

How 's everyone doing?
I 've got a touch of a problem here and would really appreciate some help. The gist of it - I've changed a water pump on a 1990 protege DOHC and managed to get camshafts and crankshaft out of aliegment (I moved the crankshaft installing T-belt and then moved the camshafts trying to fix misaligment) .Now, the only instruction for this kind of situation in the manual is " under no circumstance move the crankshaft with the belt of" - too late . Now I'm up the creek and don't even know where the paddle is . If anyone got any advice on how to put the belt back on and line everything back up I'd appreciate it (and talk to me like I'm 4 ,this whole fixing stuff ia very new to me -I've always specialized in breaking things) .

okay. I don't know if this is the proper way but if this were ever to happen to me I would do this. take the head off and find where TDC was on the head meaning both the intake and exhaust valves were closed and put the #1 piston on TDC on compression stroke. BTW TDC is Top Dead Center meaning the piston is at the top of its stroke. You can find the compression stroke because when the piston goes down it will be really hard to come up and then bolt it back to the block to put the timming belt on.

well, when i had to remove my Tbelt when i accidently tapped a freeze plug into the block (i know big fat f-ing DOH!) the exhaust cam jumped forward just slightly (AFTER I MADE MARKS ON BOTH THE BELT AND GEARS, ALL 3) i think that's where you may have gone wrong...in any case, after messing with it alone, i ended up rubbing off the marks (big fat f-ing DOH! #2) all i did was line up the crank gear and the E and I of the cam gears, had my buddy slip on the belt and viola. It started and ran perfect.

My haynes manual has a prettly long explanation on how to find TDC and set the timing. Basically what mazdaspeedwest said.
